"I have been a patient of Dr. Hannula’s off and on for 20 years or so. Earlier this year I called, and made an appointment to have my teeth cleaned. When I made the appointment and gave them my new insurance information over the phone. The day of the appointment, I checked in and gave the receptionist my insurance information again. I took a seat in the lobby and was called back for the teeth cleaning a short time later. After the cleaning the dental assistant informed me that I would need to make three more follow up appointments for further work that I needed to have done on my teeth. Ok, no problem. The dental assistants have always done very good work and I trust their opinion. Also, now have very good city employee sponsored insurance. With a very low out of pocket expense. So, I got out up out of the chair and went back up to the receptionist at the front desk and made further follow up appointments. As I left Dr. Hannula’s office and was driving home, the receptionist called me. The receptionist stated they do NOT accept the insurance I just provided them, and I am fully finically responsible for the cleaning I just received. Also, any further follow up appointments where I would be receiving services. I would be paying out of pocket. WAIT WHAT….. When I made my appointment, I gave you my insurance information over the phone prior to any services received. I again gave my insurance information before I received services. Now you are telling me you don’t accept my insurance and I am fully finically responsible for the services I just received and any further follow up appointments I scheduled......... WOW, OK. I will admit I am partially responsible for not checking with who my insurance provider contracted with prior to receiving services. However, I think when a high-end dentist establishment asks for your insurance information numerous times prior to services. They should know what insurance they accept and what ones they don’t accept. I work for and am insured by the largest city in Washington, it’s not like I have cut-rate insurance. I later called and explained the situation to the billing department. They stated they would be willing to credit me 20% off the services I received. I am still paying around $200 for services I should have been paying $5 for with my insurance. Dr. Hannula and his staff have always done very good work for me and my family members. However, this incident has left a very bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended) and I will not be seeking future dental services."
