About the Business
San Jose Buddhist Judo Club is a health institution located at 1050 North 5th Street in San Jose, California. We are committed to offering the highest quality instruction in Kodokan Judo to our students. Our goal is to help students master their judo skills, overcome their fears, and achieve success through competition in tournaments. Our experienced sensei and club provide training, coaching, and support to all students.
In addition to our annual judo tournament, we host various volunteer and social events for students and their families to bond both on and off the mat. Our dedicated volunteer instructors generously donate their time to teach judo in the community.
Join us for the SJBJC Sea Cliff Beach Party on Sunday, June 12, and consider supporting our club through Harold's Car Donation Service. Get rid of your old car while helping to support our mission of teaching judo to our community.

"Highly recommend this judo club. My daughter and I were visiting California from the UK and decided to check out some judo clubs. The level of judo taught here is excellent. The format of the session was very good. Warmup-newaza-tachiwaza. The coaches at this club do not stand around chatting. They are very watchful of their students and really help correct their technique."
"What a wonderful judo dojo for kids and adults. I can not give them enough praise and recommendation. Take your children here by all means. San Jose Buddhist Judo club is a non-profit entity, and one of the oldest judo clubs in America. The instructors are patient and watchful of all the students. Every instructor is a volunteer and even some of the younger students volunteer to assist the black belt instructors in teaching the kids. All instructors are certified and have taken classes to be able to teach. The dedication of the sensei is very evident as they work with the students. Classes are held Monday and Thursday at 7:00PM for adults and youth and 6:30PM for the pre-judo kids under 7 years old. The monthly tuition/membership fee is only $50, which is half of what a commercial school costs, and it is a non-profit that really cares about the students. After class one of the senior instructors is usually seen handing out ice pops or cupcakes, that she bakes, to the pre-judo class. You can tell she loves judo and her students. This club does form community and also offers parents the opportunity to volunteer and support the club. There are many kids here and your child will make friends from many cultures, and your kid will learn a little about Japanese judo culture too. You do not have to be Buddhist to joint this club, it is open to all and not at all religious. I'm very proud that my son is a student here and I have watched his confidence grow under the care and instruction of his sensei(s). The club is worth twice the tuition There is a Booster club that helps raise money for the club activities, of which there are several throughout the year. The club also host the Sensei Memorial Judo Tournament at San Jose State University, and that tournament is on it's 68th year as of 2016. The tournament is well attended and is free to viewers, and very low cost to competitors. There were over 700 competitors in all classes this year. The club also hosts a golf tournament every year to raise money for college scholarships for its students. This club is very well run by instructors and board, who care and shape students to be honorable, responsible adults and competitors. It also produces Judo Olympians, one of whom is competing in the Brazil Olympics. I highly recommend this judo club for yourself or your children, it is really a wonderful judo dojo and it is located in Japan town which is a really nice neighborhood in San Jose. After or before class you can get a bite to eat at the many restaurants here. Next year the club is scheduled to return to it's regular location at the Buddhist church gymnasium, which is undergoing seismic retrofit. PANDEMIC UPDATE The club is open, maintained, clean and disinfected. The senseis are experienced instructors. Class sizes are growing and people are enjoying the workout, join the fun."
