"I started training with sensei Ryan in the mid-1990s when I was in junior high and high school, when he was running an American karate dojo, and have trained more recently with him in danzan ryu jujitsu. I can say from personal experience that Ryan is an exceptionally well-rounded martial artist, both physically and spiritually, and continues to evolve in his own learning--a sign of someone who is truly committed to martial studies. What really makes Ryan stand out, however, is his enthusiasm and skill in instructing. Teaching is something that he clearly has a passion for. He is able to break down complicated concepts into easily digestible chunks, and has a way of seeing a student's strengths and weaknesses. This allows him to take a personalized approach to that student's development, as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach to martial arts. His demeanor in the class is an interesting blend of drill sergeant, coach and mentor. He will push you, but in an encouraging way. If I lived in Marin I would train with Ryan more consistently. For anyone who wants a well-rounded approach to martial arts--that includes comprehensive striking, weapons, ground game and defense against weapons and multiple opponents--I give MSDS my highest recommendation."
