"I had the worst experience of my life with this surgeon. I originally came to her with pelvic pain. Literally every step of the way was a nightmare from the consultation to the aftercare. She originally did not believe me, accused me of “being on narcotics” because I told her I fainted from the pain and bleeding. She acted like she hated me the minute she laid eyes on me and treated me as such. Before my surgery a large long term cyst had been found present. No matter how many times i told her and showed her old reports she refused to believe it was the same cyst. When I had my laparoscopic surgery I had extreme bruising and a hole the size of my finger left in my abdomen that was at least half an inch deep and you could see into my body. Immediately after surgery I asked her if she had found the cyst and taken it out which she replied yes! However upon my next scan it was still there. A few weeks after the operation I showed her the hole and she told me to not let anyone else see it and that she would address it, she accused me of picking at my wound to make the hole which I certainly did not. When I went to her office to have her pack the wound at UCSF she had me lay down on the table and said she forgot something and would be right back, well after 45 minutes of laying on the table I got dressed and asked the staff where she was and they said she went home for the day!! She literally just left me in the room with no notice with my wound out. So I left the office with no care that day (this is like a full month after surgery) The following day I had another doctor appointment for a non related issue and the doctor took one look at my abdomen and said he couldn’t do the procedure and instead sent me to the UCSF emergency room to look at it immediately. The ER determined I needed extensive wound care and sent me to SF GENERAL WOUND CARE CLINIC to have the wound she wanted me to not show anyone be packed and medicated every few days for months! The wound clinic also found that a hernia was under the open hole caused by the surgery. I told my primary care doctor how I was treated and she instructed me to write a letter to patient services about my experience. Dr Opoku-Anane denied it all and then contacted me personally to come at me sideways claiming she tried to help me and how dare I say anything to the hospital about my experience etc. I wasn’t trying to attack her personally but this really happened to me and she acted like I did it to myself. I then was told by two of my providers at UCSF that my patient account had been flagged claiming I was a drug user and they suggested I try getting help outside UCSF. So I did, I went to another hospital with all my paperwork. They identified the cyst, which was larger than a grapefruit and removed it. I had virtually no pain, bruising or scarring after my second surgery which was actually much more invasive as I had to have the whole ovary taken out as well as a few masses. My new surgeon never accused me of being a drug addict when describing my pain, she understood I felt terrible and that’s why I came to my appointment in sweat pants. I didn’t need heavy pain meds after the first day so when I compare the two surgeons and operations I have it’s like night and day. I knew from the way she treated me in our first office visit that I would have a rough surgery with her, she treated me with such little respect that is felt like she wanted to teach me a lesson or proving a point for not being the type of patient she liked, I tried to be nice to her. On paper she sounds amazing and I don’t doubt she can be a good surgeon if she likes you but unfortunately I had a horrible experience that gives me panic attacks and distrust of doctors which is unfortunate as I have some other health problems. I wish she had taken the time out to see me as a person, I’m not sure what I did or said to originally make her hate me but I bare the scars and daily pain to remind me to make sure to never cry in a doctors office again if anything is wrong."
"Dr. Opoku-Anane is a brilliant woman. I had a hysterectomy 2.5 years ago due to endometriosis. It has been the best 2.5 years of my life without pain. I highly recommend her and am beyond grateful for her talent."
"I wish I could also give her 1 million trillion stars. And flowers and a new car and a trip to Disneyland! Dr. O saved my life I have not had any pain or symptoms since she took care of me. I encourage everyone to get a hysterectomy if they can is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself at 36"
"If I can give her a trillion stars, I would. She is the most compassionate, professional doctor. I trust her so much that I've tryated my daughter in her hands. An Absolutely phenomenal human being that never leaves you confused, scared or with questions."
