About the Business

The "Forward Statue" is a historic institution located on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. This statue, created by sculptor Jean Pond Miner in 1893, is a seven-foot-tall allegorical representation of devotion and progress. It was originally displayed at the Wisconsin State Capitol in 1895 and has since become a symbol of the state's heritage.
Jean Pond Miner, a Wisconsin native, created "Forward" at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and was one of the few women artists of her time to receive such recognition. The statue depicts a female figure standing on a boat with the figure-head of "Old Abe," symbolizing the state's pioneering spirit.
Due to the delicate nature of the bronze statue, it was moved indoors in 1998 for preservation at the Wisconsin Historical Society's Headquarters building. The original statue now sits alongside a bronze replica at the west entrance to Capitol Square, serving as a reminder of Wisconsin's rich artistic heritage.
Visit the "Forward Statue" to learn more about Jean Pond Miner and the history of this iconic symbol of Wisconsin's progress and dedication.
Reviews
"Glorious architecture inside and out. Ultimate in architectural opulence - beautiful marble everywhere you look. Free tours available."
"This review is in reference to the Wisconsin State Capitol and the surrounding square, though this statue is lovely as well! (Wisconsin State Capitol is no longer taking Google Reviews) This square is absolutely gorgeous, felt very safe walking around even alone. The massive size of the Capitol building is hard to capture on film, so seeing it in person shocked me! Inside the capitol, the architecture is something straight from Europe (and much of it actually does come from European countries)! The tour guides are so amazing and knowledgeable, and blew me away with all of the details that I did not notice walking around myself."
"A great place to meet and right across the street from the Wisconsin's Veterans Museum."
"Althought this is a replica, it is still a very inspiring and beautiful statue. Jean Miner, a Madison resident, finished the original in 1895!"
