About the Business
JDC Records, located at 447 West 6th Street in Los Angeles, California, is a store founded by Jim and his late wife Dale (Dacie) Callon in 1977. The name 'JDC' comes from their initials. Jim Callon, also known as "Mr. Cool Cat," was not only a musician and sound engineer, but also a smart businessman with a passion for dance music. Together with his ambitious wife, they started selling vinyl out of the back of their car at swap meets and local stores. With dance music gaining popularity, JDC quickly became a successful business in licensing, pressing, and distributing music independently.
In the late 70's and 80's, JDC Records became a leading label of electro, disco, Italo disco, freestyle, hi-energy, bass, and hip hop hits. The first JDC Records affiliated store was called "Dance Music Forever" in San Pedro, followed by a distribution center and store in Hermosa Beach for over 20 years. Now located in historic downtown San Pedro, JDC Records continues to thrive.
Jim Callon's music career began in the 60's as the lead guitarist of 'the Glassfamily Electric Band', with their self-titled album released by Warner Bros. The band toured with iconic acts like the Doors, Janis Joplin, and even opened for the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore. Jim later worked as a sound engineer for Parliament Funkadelic, recording and mixing their seminal albums.
The Glass Family had a disco revival in the 1970's, producing successful hits like "Mr Dj You Know How To Make Me Dance" and "Crazy". Their song "Smoke Your Troubles Away" was a favorite at the Paradise Garage. Jim still performs with the original keyboardist, David Capilouto, in the Glass Family Electric Band around Los Angeles. "I just moved back to San Pedro recently and saw JDC Records on 6th St. and went in to see what they had. They had a pretty good selection of all different genres over the last 40 years and i will definitely be returning to buy more LPs as i just recently bought a new turntable .It brought back memories of when i was growing up, buying 45s and LPs at Jessies Record shop on the same block. There was also another place i used to buy 12 in singles at on 5th street. It was called JDC Studios i think . Anyway i would recommend this record shop to anyone. BTW, i walked out with a 12 in LA Dream Team is in The House!!"

"JDC is in old town San Pedro and is the nicest record store. They have everything you could want and the service is great. Parking is free and easy on the street. The service is just amazing. I was with my grandson and he wanted to buy some vinyl for his mommy was not sure what she would like. The woman who took care of us was so nice to him and they looked and looked and he noticed some covers with photos and recognized the artists--he is speech delayed--and pointed to those and the two of them made two great choices. His mommy was so pleased. They also have CDs, cassettes, Tee shirts and other items. The store is not huge, but big enough to find what you want and the prices are very reasonable. We can't wait to go back."
