Ashland Singing and Voice Lessons: Ashland School of Uncovering the Voice

"Finding Ruth’s school of singing has been one of the highlights of my past two years. I had wanted to take singing lessons for a long time, but I felt apprehensive about singing in front of a teacher who would be analyzing my performance. I was worried that the teacher would provide feedback and I wouldn’t be able to alter what I was doing accordingly! I felt at ease upon reviewing Ruth’s website (‘uncovering the voice’ seemed fairly non-threatening) and signed up for lessons. I think that her style of instruction and interaction is very accessible. It is much more about letting one’s voice come out without focusing too much on what it sounds like than about trying to achieve a certain sound or quality. Singing is more joyful for me now. My husband goes to Ruth for lessons as well, and he was not able to match pitch/sing in tune until working with her. He finds his lessons very helpful to decrease how stressed he is feeling. I have attended some of Ruth’s group singing sessions (with some of her students) that typically include seasonal songs as well as wassailing practices and performances. I’d never sung in a large group with structured harmonies before, and in particular the experience of attending wassailing practices and performances in late 2023 was one of the most joyful and delightful parts of my year (and it was a wonderful year for me). I recommend the Ashland School of Uncovering the Voice to people who are experienced singers, and especially to those who would like to change their relationship with singing, and enhance it, who might otherwise not know where to begin."
