"This had to have been one of the worst symphony attendances in Salinas ever. I don't think they had more than a 50% house. Nonetheless the orchestra was in remarkably fine condition. Better than I have heard them in years. Max conducted the whole program from memory. The upper strings all played on pitch, the disastrous horn section from last year was fixed. Till Eulenspiegel, a real test for any orchestra, was miraculously performed without a serious glitch. The Lohengrin prelude was played at the briskest tempo I've ever heard it. I loved it. The Brahms 4 was also excellently performed but I have heard more exciting performances. I'm really concerned at the poor attendance"
