"This marker is not positioned exactly where the mission once stood. The original San Gabriel Mission, known as Misión Vieja, was actually an adobe structure covered with thatch, and likely located in a field on the other side of the road, near the banks of the river. The entire establishment was later washed away in a flood, which is why they had to relocate to higher ground."
"it's actually the original site of the San Gabriel mission. there isn't much to see besides the plaque and the sign. i wish they would give something this historic a little more significance but i guess it's better than knocking it down. the parking here is scarce though."
