"Thieves. I applied 3 weeks ago, was promptly turned down but they have yet to refund my almost $300. I have called various times, emailed vaious times and have yet to get an actual answer on when i'll get my money back. I've had reps who lied and said they can't even transfer me to the correct department in order to ask for my money back. I'm seeking legal representation because there is no way i'm letting them try to play me for a fool over $300 dollars."
"Room was ok but they have fraudulent billing charges. They continued to charge me for garage use even after my lease was up. They also charged extra days of rent for no reason. When I tried to get my money back they repeatedly say they will have billing call to fix the issue but they never have even after numerous email and phone reminders on my part."
"TLDR: Unsettling. Imagine strangers with keys to your home coming into your home without notice and asking you information about the home and details of shared living. Note that the five stars review are only about the process of signing a lease with them, nice at first, but not about the actual experience of living there. Internet is awful, walls are thin, so you can forget about work from home and sleep. When I first moved in, there was cleaners coming in to clean communal areas once a week, then they change to once every two weeks, sometimes they will miss a week. So RIP if your roommates are dirty. They did it obviously to cut cost and I guess you can sue them for misinformation about their services on their website. Maintenance is not helpful, sometimes even rude, strangers will always come barging into your space without prior notice. Personal rooms have no lock… Common has disregarded my roommates’ and my emails about home issues, such as bathroom plumbing problems and MONTHS long delay to fix dish washer, laundry washer and dryer when they stopped working. My roommate has moved out for that lack of due diligence. Imagine having to pay for all the appliances and not being able to use them and having to take extra efforts and cost to do your washing elsewhere… no compensation for the months long delays! Leasing agents brings parades of strangers into your living space to tour without notice, sometimes even with big dogs! Unlawful! This is trespassing! What’s even more pathetic, most leasing agents that worked there before has quit, just imagine the reasons. So they only have new agents who has no clue about the place showing the rooms. Common will fake excuses to not refund you your initial deposit even when you leave it clean and tidy. Per legal advice, I had to send a demand letter for them to return my deposit. Smh, unlawful business practices, thieves. Stay away from this place, unless you like to be mistreated. One roommate had to scour the city and phone the police for his missing car that was towed by Common. They had no records of where they towed it. The other roommates had to deal with her private bathroom with ceilings being torn apart with a huge gaping hole for months. Her stuff were moved and touched without notice, her private bathroom and room was left so dirty and messy. She felt so violated. California laws are pretty tenant friendly, so if you are a step away from homelessness, get yourself a lawyer friend and you can consider living here with the above mentioned scenarios happening. The longer you live here the more problems."
"10/4 update: no response from Common ... as expected! They don't seem to be very interested in addressing any issue ... They pretend to but they really have no interest whatsoever I am afraid ... Shame on you and your lies, Common! 9/29 Update: I have already sent a message a few days ago as requested but nobody bothered responding ! Very slow with repairs and supplies. Absolutely unresponsive collection departments. Watch out, they will charge you all kind of fees for no reason. They claimed they did not receive our check and told us to cancel it and send a wire. After they received the wire, they tried to cash the check that they told us to cancel and charged us fees because the check had been cancelled. The collection department told us that they would reverse the fees but never did … watch out especially for Kaitlin, Member Support Specialist; and Joseph S. AR Collections Associate. They are totally unreliable!"
"Their leasing office agents were super helpful and quick to reply right up until immediately after I signed the lease. The building itself is very nice which is what makes this company's poor management so disappointing. I never received a physical key to the building, they have you download an app to unlock all doors. For whatever reason the app did not work with my phone until almost 2 months after move in. I attempted to call on my move in day and while the person in their call center tried to be helpful there is no on site staff to assist with any issues. Their one maintenance person (who does not live on site) was not available that day and the only reason I was even able to access the apartment for those 2 months was with the help of my roommates. For this period I called their call center (the only available contact after the leasing office ghosted me) almost daily. It was a different person picking up each time who had seemingly no knowledge of my issue, so I had to explain it each time. After a couple weeks a manager or something started emailing me to ask if I was "still experiencing the issue" despite the fact that no one ever made any attempt to fix it. When I said the app still wasn't working they said they would "discuss with their team." When I asked them specifically what they were doing or discussing to help me they would not answer for a few days and then email me to ask if I was "still experiencing the issue." This continued for several weeks. After almost 2 months the maintenance guy showed up, completely took apart the stupid digital lock and put it back together (it took like 2 hours) and after that it worked fine. The leasing office agents would also regularly tour people through our apartment as if it was a model unit without notice. I as well as multiple other roommates emailed them to let them know that per law they are required to give a 24 hour notice before entering our apartment for non-emergency reasons. They apologized and started emailing notices, but never 24 hours in advance. Usually the notices would only be an hour or two in advance, usually when I was already at work and not able to run home and put away any personal belongings. Any attempt to call them out on this was met by an apology and then another email a day later saying they would be touring someone in the apartment in an hour. Our unit also started experiencing internet connectivity issues, and when we emailed the call center they said it was working fine on their end (again, no one works or lives in the actual building) and that nothing was wrong. One roommate who works from home ended up having to buy his own router in order to be able to work. When I finally moved out they emailed me a 2 sentence email saying they were fining me for not returning a mail key I never received (we had a shared one for the unit, not individual keys, and during the whole app fiasco I was told they do not give out physical keys) and ambiguous "damage to light fixtures." I attempted to contact them multiple times about the mail key and the fact that I had noted that the ceiling light was flickering upon move in inspection and they literally never got back to me and mailed me the check with the deductions. TLDR; don't sign a lease here. There's so many other smaller issues I didn't address here. If all the tenants got together and compared their various complaints they would probably have enough for a lawsuit."
