Short Stories Hotel

"We enjoyed our stay here for two nights. I appreciated the intentional decor and design-forward aesthetic - especially the terrazzo finish that makes up the bathroom vanity, bathroom floors, and shower. This motel was originally built in the 1960s and reopened in 2022 as Short Stories after an ownership change and renovation. It appears everything in the rooms have been fully updated except for the heating/cooling units and windows (as of early 2024). Overall our stay at the hotel was good - the hotel location is walkable to The Original Farmer’s Market across the street (must-visit) and local shops along some of the bordering streets. If you are sensitive to noise, I wouldn’t recommend this hotel though. It’s located right off a traffic-heavy street, and you can hear the cars from inside your room. You can also hear everything from the outdoor hallways, plus when the toilet flushes or water runs from the shower in neighbouring rooms. This didn’t bother us, but something to note if you are a light sleeper!"

"Sorry, not sorry. Do your research before booking this hotel. The location is great and that's about it. There are many other hotels in the neighborhood that are not over priced with clean comfortable rooms and helpful staff. The housekeeping at Short Stories is exemplary. The rooms and public areas are spotless. The rest of the staff, however, are mundane and unresponsive. God help you if something goes wrong. My TV wouldn't work both nights I was there. The front desk told me to unplug it and see if that helps. When I persisted they told me the engineer was out for surgery. Seriously. They tout a complimentary morning coffee and tea service on the patio that amounted to nothing but an empty thermos of coffee and a few tea bags tossed on the table. Short Stories considers that service?? The little plastic cup of Minute Maid lemonade they hand you at check in doesn't make up for the utter lack of service. This hotel is a way overpriced gimmick with a great location. That's all."

"It is with a heavy heart that that I leave this review. I spent hours researching hotel options in LA - it's a huge and expensive city when it comes to accommodation and so choosing the right hotel was a big decision. Booking this hotel I was so excited to stay here - this was our 'splurge' hotel for our trip. And while there were some really great aspects of this hotel - notably, the location, the bed which is probably the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in, the cleanliness and the shower which has excellent pressure - the service in this hotel really soured our experience. Starting with the checkin experience. As we were checked in, they took and charged our card without telling us what they were charging us for (we weren't asked to sign anything or enter a pin etc) - when we questioned the charges to our card it turns out there is $100 a day deposit (totally fine, if you're told that) and a resort fee although what this is for is a mystery as we were told of no other amenities or facilities. It honestly felt like we were really hassling the staff by checking in. Later in our stay we also saw other people checking in and being offered a welcome drink - we weren't offered anything. The main issue came with our laundry. We dropped off a bag of laundry which we were told would be returned in 24hrs. It actually took 36 hours to be returned (not ideal when you're travelling) and when it came back all of our clothes had shrunk with 75% of our clothes having such significant shrinkage that they are no longer wearable. And while we were refunded $100 (under half the value of the damaged clothes), I was a little confused when they told us that they felt like the middle man between us and the laundry service and didn't want to place blame on anyone. Why we would be to blame for this outcome is a mystery. While there are some good things about this hotel, our experience with the service here was extremely disappointing."

"I can't say more great things about Short Stories Hotel. From the check-in all the way through to departure, our stay was seamless and memorable! A big plus for us was the complimentary coffee in the morning which we enjoyed in the beautiful, open-roof courtyard, and the comfortable, chic rooms - good interiors go a long way! I'd consider this spot a hidden gem in a great locale, and recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed, quiet and luxe stay in LA! We'll definitely be back."

"Our stay was so comfortable and this is the most fashionable and classy hotel I have stayed at. We were in town to check on one of our businesses and we are so happy with our stay. I have worked in several hotels when I was younger and I know great service when I see it. At one point the room next to us was yelling at one in the morning and half awake, I called the front desk for help and our neighbors stopped yelling almost immediately. I really appreciate them fixing that issue for us. Thanks!"
