About the Business
Rocky Oaks Park is a hidden gem nestled among the hustle and bustle of modern life in Malibu, California. This tranquil park features a seasonal pond and a variety of plant communities that provide a habitat for local wildlife. Take a leisurely hike along the loop trails and enjoy picturesque views of the pond, once used as a watering hole for cattle but now a vital water source for native animals such as rabbits, coyotes, and deer.
Plants like tule, cattail, and willow flourish in and around the pond, while water birds like buffleheads and mallards gracefully glide across the water. The park serves as a rest stop and commuting area for animals traveling between habitats in the Santa Monica Mountains.
To visit Rocky Oaks Park, head to 107 Kanan Dume Road and follow the directions to the entrance located in the 31500 block of Mulholland Highway. From the Ventura Freeway (U.S. 101), take Kanan Road south to Mulholland Highway, then turn right and right again into the parking lot. "Super fun spot to do a short hike with the family. Great Little Rock formations, cool wildlife, and some benches to relax in the shade. And it has a parking lot with trash cans and a bathroom, so I’m not sure what more you could want from your short nature hike location."
"Amazing construction and gorgeous viewing"
"It's a wonderful place to inhale some nature and get away from the city for a while. The pond has a very relaxing vibe. Please respect the place."
"You can walk the whole thing in an hour and a half. Sometimes there is water in the pond. Sometimes it stays dry for years. No fishing, obviously. Traffic and vineyard construction and machinery noise. Has a restroom. A lot of the pictures posted here are NOT Rocky Oaks Park. There are no African animals, grapes, stone pavement, doors, or yellow frames."
"Happy to have found this lovely lake off Kanan Dume exit. Lovely surroundings. It was good to see that a lot of the oak trees that had been in the middle of a fire had new green leaves. Nice easy hike to but be aware that there are many tiny frogs under foot be mindful as you take each step."
