"It's a small unassuming cabin built in the 1851, and is full of memorabilia from Point Lobos' storied past as a whaling station, abalone cannery, WII training area, and more. The docents here are really friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the area. There's an accessible entrance too though you'll have to wheel over a small dirt hill. The cabin overlooks a cove that's a popular diving spot where permits are required; only 30 are granted a day to the underwater preserve. There's a surprisingly clean bathroom at the parking lot too. It's a great chill spot to visit with kids and older folks, for those who've already been to all the usual spots in Monterey / Carmel."
"If you're out on the trail, be sure to visit this small museum. It was interesting to learn the history of this area and the people who once lived here. And nice volunteers will tell you more about marine fauna. The museum itself is not large, but well-kept and atmospheric."
"We had a great experience. We are grateful for docent who shared so much knowledge with us. There are many things to explore outside. There was even a scope set up outside. Our whole family got to see an osprey for the first time. It was a sweet treat! The whale bones were a big hit with our grandsons. We left happy and full of whale knowledge. Donations are greatly accepted and well deserved. -Regina"
"We’ve been to Point Lobos many times to hike, but today was the first time we were able to see the Whalers museum. If it is open when you come to Point Lobos, don’t miss it!"
"I love this museum, it is as charming and rustic as you possibly can get, but for Point Lobos that is exactly what you need. Point Lobos has a deep history. One part of that history is that it was a major whaling center on the West Coast of the US. You can see the history, feel it and smell it as the ocean breeze blows in from the Cove."
