About the Business

Kruse Rhododendron State Natural Reserve is a park located in Cazadero, California, United States. This reserve, adjacent to Salt Point State Park, was generously donated by Edward P. Kruse in 1933 as a living memorial to his father. The reserve is home to a variety of plant species, including second-growth redwood, Douglas fir, grand fir, tanoak, and vibrant rhododendrons that bloom in the spring, creating a stunning display of pink flowers amidst the lush greenery.
Visitors can explore over two miles of hiking trails that wind through the peaceful forest, with a shorter loop trail that takes you through clusters of rhododendrons. The reserve also features fern-covered canyons with seasonal streams, and a variety of understory plants such as salal, pacific wax myrtle, and California huckleberry. To protect the delicate ecosystem, it is important to stay on designated trails.
To reach the reserve, drive twenty miles north of Jenner on Highway One and turn onto Kruse Ranch Road near milepost 43. The road leads to a small parking lot for the reserve, but please note that buses and trailers are not recommended. The reserve is accessible year-round, with mild winters and cool, foggy summers typical of California's North Coast.
Whether you have just an hour or a half day to spare, a visit to Kruse Rhododendron State Natural Reserve offers a peaceful retreat in a beautiful second-growth redwood forest. Don't miss the opportunity to witness the breathtaking display of rhododendron blooms from mid-April to mid-June. For more information and updates on accessibility features, check the Salt Point State Park brochure or visit the park's website.
Reviews
"Gorgeous trails for hiking! The forest is lush green and calm! Perfect place to visit!"
"Peaceful secluded forest loop trail with a variety of beautiful flowers, trees and plants. The parking lot is about 0.4 miles from highway 1. The full loop is 2-3 miles long with some ups and downs, but nothing too strenuous. Definitely a moderate hike. Go around May to have the best chance of seeing the rhododendrons in bloom. But it's lovely even when their season is over. Lots of smaller plants remain in bloom. There is a weak mobile signal here, so you can look up interesting plants with Google Lens, etc. There are many charming foot bridges too."
"Wait two weeks and go the flowers will be in bloom around May 1."
"Quiet loop hike through the woods. Rhododendrons bloom April through June, but other wildflowers are here and there. Parking is just a short drive on a gravel road from the turnoff from Highway 1."
"Beautiful park with a low - moderately strenuous 2.5 mile loop hike, where you will see many species of trees, plants, and flowers!"
