Situated in the Golden Hill Park section of Balboa Park, this rustic Arts & Crafts style inglenook features benches, rock double stairways, walls, and radiating trails designed by architect Henry Lord Gay in 1907. Despite its historical significance, the site has been neglected by the City for over 50 years, with the wood benches gone, stairs deteriorating, and the fountain no longer functioning. With the potential to be restored as a neighborhood amenity and tourist attraction, the Golden Hill Fountain Grotto is a hidden gem waiting to be rediscovered.

"The masonry and stonework are great, but some stones are missing, graffitied or damaged. Non-housed camping, so be aware."
"A neglected ruin that serves as a window to a golden hill park of the past. I honestly love the stickers and little bits of street art strew throughout the old grotto. However there seems to be more and more trash build up each time I have visited. Otherwise a wonderfully odd tucked away little corner that I very much recommend stopping by at least once for those curious."

"Unsure of the historical significance, but it seems like it's currently used as a place for kids to hang out and drink after dark. Seems like there's been some recent effort to rejuvenate and protect this landmark, but it doesn't seem like it's been fully adopted by the city. Interesting because the nearby greenspace is so well maintained. Could use some graffiti removal."
