El Cholo is a historic institution located at 840 East Whittier Boulevard in La Habra, California. Originally opened as The Sonora Cafe by Alejandro Borquez and his wife Rosa, the restaurant was renamed El Cholo after a guest drew a figure of a man on the menu and called him "El Cholo". The restaurant has a rich history, with George Salisbury and his wife Aurelia opening their own El Cholo location and introducing dishes like nachos to the menu.
With Joe Reina as head chef for 54 years, El Cholo has become a staple in the Mexican restaurant industry. The restaurant is now in its third generation of family ownership, with Ron Salisbury opening a location in La Habra. El Cholo is known for its margaritas, using premium ingredients and being the world's largest user of Cuervo 1800 Tequila.
In addition to the La Habra location, El Cholo has expanded to Downtown Los Angeles and Corona del Mar, with Filet Mignon Tacos winning awards for Best Taco. With the fourth and fifth generations now working at the restaurants, El Cholo continues to be a beloved destination for delicious Mexican food and drinks.

"I went here to celebrate my birthday. I called ahead of time since I had a large party. I was told that they don't take reservations and they would be able to accommodate me. When I arrived I was told that my party had to be split up or we could wait an hour for a table together. We didn't want to wait that long so we split up but it made me sad that I couldn't celebrate my birthday with my entire party. The food and staff are always good here."
"Some friends took me to this hundred year old restaurant to have some great Mexican food. It was fantastic and the nachos were perfectly made and the enchiladas were tasty. Wonderful atmosphere wonderful staff, only trouble ate too much and was too full. I will stop by again the next time I am in town."
"First time to El Choli and we loved it! We celebrated our son's birthday there. The service was perfect; our waiter was attentive, quick, and so friendly! Our food was so delicious! Their Tortilla Soup was amazing!"
"Me and my wife came here for lunch our waiter brought us chips and salsa as soon as we sat down. We ordered the coconut margarita which are so bomb. Our entrees came out fairly quick. I had the chicken Verde plate and my wife had chicken taqiutos everything was great best service I've had in a long time."
