Frontcountry Trailhead
About the Business
Frontcountry Trailhead is a park located at Lytles Loop in San Antonio, Texas, United States. This 12,000-acre wilderness area protects the city's drinking water and offers a variety of outdoor activities for visitors. With over 40 miles of trails, visitors can hike, mountain bike, or trail run through gently rolling grasslands and rugged canyons. The park also features a playscape, Discovery Trail, and camping facilities for those looking to connect with nature.
Explore the Joe Johnston Route to the historic Zizelmann House, which dates back to the 1880s, and discover 110-million-year-old dinosaur tracks along the way. For stunning views, hike the Far Reaches Trail to the Chula Vista and Sotol overlooks. The park is home to the only known dinosaur footprints on public land in Bexar County, believed to be left by Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidon dinosaurs millions of years ago.
To help preserve the sensitive ecosystem of Government Canyon State Natural Area, visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles and participate in volunteer opportunities. The park also offers educational programs for students and a park store with nature items and souvenirs.
Due to high visitation, reservations are recommended for camping and day use to guarantee entry. The park may open for additional dates on holidays and spring break, so it's best to check the Holiday Schedule page for details. Protected Habitat Area trails are open seasonally, while all other trails are open year-round. Pets are restricted to the front country trails, and visitors are encouraged to report any violations to Operation Game Thief.
Government Canyon State Natural Area is committed to providing programs and services without discrimination and welcomes all visitors to enjoy the beauty of this urban refuge.

"Beautiful place so close to San Antonio. Enjoy it and take care of it San Antonio!"
"Great hiking trails. Nice facilities and clean restrooms. Extremely family friendly. There are trails for all skill levels. Bring water because you never know when you will need it. Staff was nice."
"It's always a pleasure to go here. There are many trails easy for the l8ttle ones. There is a Discovery playground and amphitheater area. Most of the time there is a ranger who can guide you and give you info. Many people walking their dogs on a leach. Very safe to go."
"This was such a wonderful place to hike. There are from moderate to challenging trails. Be sure to have plenty of water!!! We had very little to no cell reception but the trails had a good amount of traffic. Located in Government Canyon State Park, this is a gem and full of wildlife. There are so many trails to hike and they offer guided tours. We are definitely heading back and doing some more exploring. Must visit the dinosaur tracks!!"
"Come prepared in your comfy shoes. The trails turn rugged after the first half mile. Not toddler bike friendly. We ended carrying our LO on our shoulders half the way. There is a few trails you can choose from. I would suggest bringing a walking stick!"
