"Growing up in Webster Groves, I was hesitant to send my kids to city schools when we moved from Webster to the city. I pushed and fought to make sure they got into great magnet schools. Turned out that the learning style of our original magnet school was not a good fit for our oldest child. I removed him from the school (his teacher was racist and I was told by the principal that the racist comments from his teacher were a “gray area.”) and transferred him to Woodward in the middle of the school year. Not only were the teachers more accepting than I felt the magnet school was, the parents were so welcoming and nice. (The parents at our magnet school were all in their own little cliques based on either race or income. Seriously.) The teachers at Woodward are awesome. I don’t know how else to describe them. The principal is amazing (Ms. Austin). The art program is actually teaching my children about art (versus coloring on used tissue containers at their magnet school – YUCK!). The kids have such great days at school and absolutely LOVE it. We moved our younger child to Woodward at the beginning of this school year. We had a little tiff with his teacher refusing to call him by his middle name (long story as to why we refuse to use his first name), but we got it worked out quickly. The before/after care program is amazing as well. The teachers are so hands-on with the students! They are quick to let you know about any problem, and they understand that sometimes kids will be kids. I highly recommend this elementary school."
