Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area
About the Business
Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area is a stunning natural oasis located in Mount Vernon, Indiana. Covering approximately 7,404 acres, this park features a 1,400-acre oxbow lake, smaller sloughs, marshes, and beautiful bottomland hardwood forests. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, and paddling.
The history of Hovey Lake FWA dates back to the 1800s when it was designated as swampland and later became the property of Charles J. Hovey. The Indiana DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife acquired the land in 1939 and has been dedicated to preserving and maintaining this unique natural area ever since.
Funding for the operation and maintenance of Hovey Lake FWA comes from the sale of hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses, as well as federal programs geared towards fish and wildlife restoration. Visitors are encouraged to obtain a one-day access permit before entering the park to help improve the overall experience for all users.
While there are no designated trails, visitors can explore the park through mowed lanes. Make sure to inquire at the office for information on available trails during your visit. Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area is a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts looking to connect with nature in a peaceful and serene setting.

Reviews
"The Cypress trees at Hovey are definitely my favorite thing about it!"
"The ramp area has lots of dead fish and foul water but once you kayak out the lake is beautiful. The cypress groves are worth exploring."
"Hovey used to be a great resource but the state has let it run down. In its hay day you could camp, rent boats, grill out on the provided grills, plenty of picnic tables, fish cleaning facility, great fishing, but all those things are gone. Now it's great for kayaking, canoeing, bow fishing, duck and teal hunting in the winter. The eagle watching can be cool as well. It just depends on what you are looking foe, but the life it once had is gone."
"I love kayaking here. Go in the evening and listen to the Cypress trees and watch a beautiful sunset."
"Nice place to explore. Be careful of the north side of the lake. Water level is low- its muddy!"
