"Originally a town of nature-based industry, early businesses included two mills along the Monocacy River, a tannery, an ice creamery that used a spring, and a brickworks that used local lime. By 1850 it was entering a 100 year period of prosperity, which left several mansions and stone homes along main street. Buckeystown Pike, bisecting the town, was heavily traveled by soldiers of the Revolutionary and civil wars."
