"Friday Dad's oncologist (Dr Sonnenburg) called my cell phone in Knoxville, Tennessee (where I live) and placed me on speaker while he was in exam room with my Dad and step mother to go over my Father’s scans. Dr. Sonnenburg (specialist in prostate and bladder cancer) told me, "I am worried about your Dad." The bone scan proved to be an aggressive protate cancer, it has started to create numerous tumors in his lungs and pelvic area. He said the tumors have grown in number and size tremendously from January 24 through the scan taken Tuesday on February 13. He will proceed with the hormone therapy to reduce testosterone, because it could work at stopping the growth, but he said the cancer has spread so aggressively that the cancer may not respond to this. Dr. said there is no treatment for this, only hope in that it might shrink. He reiterated to me that he is concerned about my Dad. My Father and I appreciated Dr Sonnenburg for being caring and frank with what we are dealing with. I drove up to Indianapolis the next day because of this phone call. How intuitive this doctor is to understand family dynamics enough to share serious results with me living 400 miles away in real time via a phone call. It allowed me to make some decisions so I can support my Father in a more understanding way. I hope there are more cures one day for various cancers. It’s difficult to see my Father decline from congestive heart failure. afib, and prostate cancer. But I am incredibly thankful my father got to see age 91!!! The year my Father was born, the average life expectancy was 57 years old!!! Cancer sucks. I wish we could slow down time and cancer. But we have today. Carpe Diem!!!! And thankfully there are wonderful doctors in this world doing their very best for the patients in their care like Dr Sonnenburg."
"While Dr. Sonnenburg was very friendly, he did not keep his patient/family informed about prognosis. Dr. Sonnenburg told us we just needed to wait for things to improve and that time was on our side. Dr. Sonnenburg never discussed prognosis or any additional details about the cancer that lead to my father's sudden death about a month after a diagnosis. I understand that the cancer was aggressive, but Dr. Sonnenburg's communication with our family was majorly lacking."
"Dealing with acute ITP has been one of the scariest moments of my life. Dr. Sonnenburg has helped alleviate my fears by staying honest about my treatment and prognosis going forward. He responds quickly to messages and phone calls. Has a very direct, laid back approach and apts feel like catching up with an old friend. Bed side manner is fantastic. I’ll recommend him to anyone! Thank you Sonnenburg for all you do!!!"
