"Have you ever asked yourself, is this class actually making me better? This is the harsh reality -- most acting teachers do not know how to help. Their "truisms" and their "codes" are merely peddled phrases that they hope, against all later evidence, will help you improve. In reality, they don't work--and any subsequent improvement is merely coincidental. Steven developed his approach for working with actors by being a director. In other words, he was responsible for their results. This is not a university where teachers hand you off in 4 years, never expecting you to get onstage. Your performance reflects him; thus he has always remembered how to flex with the individual. Sometimes I'm glad Steve's classes are so sparsely attended. I wonder if that has saved them from the mediocritizing effects of reputation. Yet I know that is not true--that a large audience would only further fuel the machine. I have noticed that actors who are not earnest and right in spirit tend to leave. That to me only furthers my suspicion that this is really it. This, combined with actual experienced knowledge of the industry, is a worthwhile venture. I highly advise anyone drawn to acting to seek out the professional program."
