Reviews of Magnolias Living
"Would give this place negative one thousand stars if I could. Where do I even begin? I was told I was the second person to move into 3340, yet I did not have a mailbox, air conditioning, or even a shower rod for several months. It’s gotten to the point where I am receiving paper notices on my door almost every week for something new, yet Mandy in the office absolutely REFUSES to answer my phone calls or return my messages. I work from 6am-9pm Monday-Friday, I work Saturdays 8am-1pm, and I also work every single Sunday, so I am unable to visit the office in person. I would assume a professional company would respond to resident concerns, but this does not happen at Magnolia’s Living. I am a responsible tenant, I pay my bills on time, and I notify the office when I need to pay late. However, Mandy has made it her personal mission to antagonize me on a weekly basis. She then cowers in fear of retaliation instead of having a simple conversation with me, as needed. In addition to my own personal woes, the parking situation is out of control. There are vehicles parked every which way, and the faux parking passes we received are not checked or implemented in any way. I have to park on Meridian Street to ensure that I can leave at 5 in the morning to get to work, because Magnolia’s Living refuses to tow or fine vehicles parked sideways or in the middle of the parking lot, making it impossible to get out of the parking lot without damaging vehicles. The property also refuses to add parking spots, although it is a dire need. Instead, they have taken it upon themselves to "update" the property, installing tacky flooring along the stairs and cheap doors at the front and backs of the buildings. These exterior renovations come with maintenance workers causing all kinds of noise at early and all hours of the day, seven days a week. They do not take into consideration any residents’ sleep schedule. All of our rent money is invested in these property renovations, which have cheapened the look of the property as a whole. There are some residents who add to this environment, dumping bags of trash in the parking lot or on the driveways entering and exiting the lot. The only reason I ended up here is because I am a one family unit; I have no living parents, no siblings or relatives to extend me a helping hand. I take care of all of my finances on my own, no handouts and no assistance whatsoever. I was duped into believing Magnolia’s Living/Midwest Properties would be an affordable, sensible safe space in downtown Indy, but every day here is a nightmare. Even if you are desperate, do NOT rent here. You have been warned!!!! Do NOT rent here; you WILL regret it!!!"
"Do not move in here. I leased with them for a year from 2018 to 2019. Never had a problem till I ended my lease and moved out. got a letter in the mail saying I owed, which I did not pay because that was incorrect. The rent was paid every month! Even paid a non refundable move in fee in the beginning which I later found out is a scam. Wendy Hernandez was the owner or manager at the time. She was also very unprofessional considering the fact u could look her up on Facebook and see her promoting gang violence!! Half the time she wasn’t in the office and it took her forever to even get her to respond when it came to me trying to give her my money order for rent. My mailbox was broke for weeks before it got repaired. Busted window in the hallway for weeks as well. Anyways Now I have a $500 open debt in my collections and I don’t even know why. Has anyone else got charged after moving out even tho u always paid rent?"
"I'm sad to see bad reviews. I lived here from 1977 to 1982 and have fond memories. My apartment had a window over the kitchen sink, and was $130 per month. Lovely place and great location for a young single. Well maintained in those days. Secure entry--people had to pick up the phone in the vestibule and dial the apartment number. Residents buzzed people in if they wanted them to come inside. No crime, no solicitors. All original hardwood floors and craftsman woodwork. There were beautiful original builtin storage cabinets with glass doors dividing the dining room and kitchen--I used as china cabinets to display pretty stuff. Kitchens appear to have been renovated, but it would have been nice to retain some of the historic character. My closet could have been a room, it was so big. Studio apartments had Murphy beds. It was my first home after college, and I still love craftsman style and woodwork."
"I was in town visiting my younger sister only to find that her living conditions are absolutely deplorable. See the photos I have attached. Walking through the halls the building is so poorly maintained - and feels nearly vacant - its like a haunted mansion. Paint is peeling from the hallway walls, the laundry room has a ceiling around the main plumbing stack that looks like it is going to cave in and just about every other apartment door has been boarded up, or appears like an attempted break in. I did some digging to find out what slum lord owns this place. Apparently - and this is all public record through the Marion County tax system - its a guy named "Ernest Tschannen" who is well known in California as a big philanthropist. If you google him you'll find articles about $38 million donations to colleges all apparently from the wealth built on the backs of his tenants in these slums. Other articles say he is a trained engineer, but switched to real estate investing to build his riches. I can't imagine someone trained as an engineer would let his building deteriorate to this magnitude. Through a search of public court records I found he has had 2 cases with the health department, but besides that the buildings are probably just BARELY habitable enough to keep the health dept. and neighborhood code off of his case. Either way, stay far far away."
"To start off- Before moving in I was assured that the apartment was a safe place to live. In the month I was there I have been made aware of the recent arson, robberies, assaults, a stabbing outside my building and drug related crime. The day I was scheduled to move in I was informed that my apartment was not ready. The unit had not been cleaned and there was NO DOOR to my apartment. Rather than making the door a priority I was given a plywood "door" that was padlocked. It took 3 days for them to put an actual door on and I could not live there until then. I was told it was because they had to fire a maintenance worker, and have yet to replace him. The sink in my kitchen was not connected correctly so I had water all over the floor anytime I used it. There was a hole in the bathroom wall by the facet to the tub so again so water would leak onto the floor. I HAD NO WORKING SMOKE DETECTORS FOR OVER 2 WEEKS! It took nearly a month to get a new refrigerator, my leaked. Rather than fixing it I came home to find they had turned it off and nearly lost all food inside. I spent an hour complaining to the management company that day alone to receive a new refrigerator. The tile in the bathroom was peeling up and there was a hole in the wall leading to other apartments, this allowing numerous insects to live and travel through. The day I signed my lease I was told they would spray my apartment for the roaches that were there. Never have they actually done this. I have followed up on this many times and yet over a month later they still have not sprayed. When it became clear that none of these things were would be done and I was finding roaches living all over my apartment, as well as being bit by other insects in my sleep, I left. Rather than fixing the problem and providing a healthy place to live they decided to evict me. I would never recommend anyone moving here. The sad thing is that the apartment building was a nice place to live, however poorly run and the management company put very little interest in providing a safe and healthy living environment."
