"Fort Hancock has been shut down since 1974 and the battery is closed to the public due to its deteriorating condition, but you can walk on the trail and view the structures from outside the fence. The lighthouse is closed but you can walk or drive around and explore the area if you're interested in historical or abandoned sites."

"Beautiful area! And so close to NYC. I do wish there had been something posted about how long the trail from parking lot to the shore would be out there. We started walking and couldn't tell how much farther it would be and finally decided to just turn back. Manage our expectations a little bit."
