"This historic district was created in 1974 and expanded in 1993. It is named for the famous industrialist Andrew Carnegie who built his mansion in the area in 1902. That mansion now serves as The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. The district encompasses the blocks east of Central Park from 86th to 98th Street. It includes townhouses, mansions, and apartment buildings in popular styles from before and after the the turn of the twentieth century."
