Penelope's Closet
About the Business
Penelope's Closet is a thrift store located at 2907 Old Shell Road in Mobile, Alabama. Owned and operated by Penelope House, Inc., all proceeds from the store benefit the organization's mission and programs. Donations of gently used clothing and household items are accepted for resale, or can be donated directly to shelter clients in need. In October, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, special events like the Purple Bag Event and discounts on purple items are held to support the cause. Additionally, an exciting new project, Penelope's Park, is located at Penelope's Closet. Visit us to shop for a cause and support those in need in our community.

"Lots of good stuff but it’s piled up like a rats nest and there are no dressing rooms and no returns. I’m not going to throw money away on clothes that don’t fit. Not worth the trip. Would not go back unless there were dressing rooms opened. When we pulled in the parking lot one of the workers outside said she was hoping we would donate our “old car” very rude even as a joke."
"First off, I fully support their mission & I’m glad the money goes to a good cause. However, it can be frustrating when you get to the register and are told an item is $5-$15 more dollars than their sign, despite *not* being specially marked. It’s happened to me the last three times I’ve been there. I’ve always paid the price I was told at the register, because I support their mission. Unfortunately, this has deterred me from stopping in the last few months. Again, I support the cause, but I don’t enjoy the price going up at checkout."
"I called for help after running from my abuser and because I hadn’t been beaten in this county they wouldn’t help me! Wow! You people must not know what it actually feels like to be in fear for your life! Basic animal/human instinct tells you to run!"
"The penelope house itself is horrible. They line their own pockets and NOT the womens in the shelter with the greedy business "closet". The counselors abuse and manipulate the women and the director does not care at all. All around horrible and just another way to abuse women. I, fortunately, got out years ago and help women get HELP. This place is not to help... Its to line their own pockets and control. Please shop anywhere but here!"
