Nike Missile Base Park, Site D-87 Commerce Charter Township, MI 48382

"Nike Missile Site D-87 The Commerce / Union Lake area was home to a cold war relic: Nike missile defense base D-87. The base was one of 14 built in the mid 50's as part of the Detroit Defense Area, which was tasked with stopping Soviet Bombers from striking the industrial center of the Midwest. I toured this wide open, fenceless base in the late 70s twice with a friend. The missiles had been removed but the inground silos were still there. It was intriguing to look through the gaps between the steel doors down into the silos. Interesting to know that this quiet, rural area of Oakland County was at one time home to what was an advanced state of art military base built and maintained to protect the Detroit area automotive manufacturing complexes that were "the arsenal of democracy" ."

"Although not much physical evidence remains of this one's important defensive location, it is cool to go out and wander the area. If you look closely, you can still find the traces of the base that was once there"

"Could use a rough map of the trails, but it was fine. They need to enforce the no-hunting rule they have for this park. Gun shots going off every few minutes, some really close too."
