Saarinen House

"I took the guided house tour on July 2nd, right after the Frank Lloyd Wright Smith House tour, both led by a wonderful guide called Elena. The tour is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and starts from the Cranbrook Art Museum, which itself is an architectural masterpiece! We were taken on a walk around the pool to the Saarinen House, with beautiful views along the way. The house itself might seem somewhat ordinary from the outside, but the interior is truly stunning, and features a perfect blend of Nordic modernist and Arts and Crafts styles. I absolutely loved the dining room design, as well as the study alcove right next to the living area. At the other end of the house is a workspace that I would have loved to work from. Overall, the ground floor has a formal vibe, but as we walked up to the second floor, it felt completely different – it was lighter, more casual and rustic. The master’s bedroom was beautiful as well – and surprises await in the bedroom! In fact, throughout the tour, Elena showed us quite a few interesting design details, trivia, and nooks and crannies in the house. The tour ended in front of the house, and we were free to explore the rest of the campus on our own. If you manage to combine this with the Frank Lloyd Wight Smith House tour and other sights on the Cranbrook Campus (the Art Museum, the Cranbrook House, etc.), it will make for a modern art & architecture enthusiast’s dream day."
