About the Business
The Royal Oak Historical Society, located at 1411 West Webster Road in Royal Oak, Michigan, is a tourist attraction dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of the Royal Oak community. Founded in 1939, this private, non-profit organization is managed by a curator and a team of volunteers who collect, preserve, interpret, exhibit, and teach the heritage of Royal Oak.
The Society's mission is to promote understanding of Royal Oak's historical and cultural legacy through the preservation and interpretation of its ongoing story. Members of various civic organizations, such as the Library, the Chamber of Commerce, and the American Association of University Women, were among the founders of the Society, and continue to be active members.
In recognition of their work in uncovering the history of the Underground Railroad network in Oakland County, the Royal Oak Historical Society received a proclamation from the Oakland County Board of Commissioners. This research is part of a larger project involving five communities in Oakland County, and a traveling exhibit will be on display at the Royal Oak Historical Society Museum in early 2025.
Don Drife, a dedicated volunteer, has been working tirelessly on documenting the Hamer family from Royal Oak township as part of this project. Visitors can learn more about the Hamers and the Underground Railroad history of Royal Oak at the Society's museum.

"Once upon a time in the 50βs I used to deliver the Morning FreePress before school and the Daily Tribune in the afternoon after school. The firemen were great, they let me stand inside to get warm Ed up in the winter and in the summer I would watch them pitch horseshoes in the backyard in the afternoon."
