Originally founded on November 23, 1931 as Birmingham Teachers Credit Union, the institution was created to serve teachers and employees of the Birmingham School system. Membership is open to those who reside, work, worship, or attend school in the state of Michigan.

To join, individuals must bring a minimum deposit of $5 in cash to open a basic savings account. Members must maintain a minimum balance of $5 in this account to enjoy the benefits of membership.
