About the Business

Round Island Point Nature Preserve is a stunning park and tourist attraction located at Cedar Drive in Brimley, Michigan, United States. This large protected habitat in the Upper Peninsula is home to a variety of wildlife, including black bears, wolves, moose, and bobcats. The property is also a central flyway for migrating waterfowl and birds, making it a great spot for birdwatching.
While much of the preserve is challenging to access, a paved road cuts through the property, providing easy access to the lake. There are no established trails leading directly to the lake, but a 1½ mile inland trail and viewing area are accessible from the parking area.
Originally donated by the Finlayson family to The Nature Conservancy, the land was later transferred to Little Traverse Conservancy, which has since fundraised to purchase several additions to the preserve. To visit, head south on I-75 from Sault Ste. Marie to exit 392, then follow the directions to W. Winding Ridge Road.

"First visit to this hike. I went with my two dogs who were on a skijouring belt. My GPS took me to Cedar St. and I parked there, unsure of whether or not this was the right place. I did not see where the trail started. Saw a board on the ground and thought to myself, that it couldn't possibly be the place, but it was. The trail is quite narrow. Very narrow and deep in woods. I did a silent hike (no bear bells, though I had them in my pack and an air horn in my pocket. We saw a beaver and a bear running away from us when my beagle started baying obnoxiously loudly :) This is a great hike and I will definitely do it again. Loved it."
"Beautiful hike through a few different habitats. Lots of potential for wildlife settings (we saw river otters and lots of beaver engineering). The principal goal of our visit was to some birdwatching but the trail was so beautiful that we'll visit again for the hiking."
"A little confusing getting here. There is atleast 2 different trail heads so I'm sure this confuses google. Found the eastern one. It was just a culdesac. The trail was very pretty with all the color in the trees and on the ground it was wet and had to go around some standing water. There were trail signs but not all the trail were on them. So we be stayed on what we thought were the main trail. Hiked to the look out. This is where the other trail head is. The look out had an obstructive view. Still nice."
"Easy to find and a nice length for a simple day hike. Make sure to bring your bug spray and/or cover well! Lots of skeeters out currently. A couple cute dams, and even one you can walk out on! As of July 3, 2022 there is a fallen tree on one section of the trail, I managed to maneuver under it. It looks like other trees were recently sawn and removed from the path, which is nice to know it's kept up. Like others have said, this trail is very well marked. This was my first solo hike, and the bright blue trail markers were easy to follow (with the exception of the downed tree I mentioned earlier). It's been relatively dry recently, but a few sections of the trail were a bit mushy, would probably be much muddier with rain. Some of the boardwalks over muddy/creek sections gave a little, but just step carefully and you'll be fine."
"Awesome trail. Not much elevation change but not flat either. Trail blazes are set high so watch out. Only once that I want sure which way to go but wasn't hard to find my next mark. Found a geocache along the way."
