"All the staff is wonderful here. No frills place but such a comforting, homey feel. The grounds are historic and beautiful. Updated while keeping character. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a place to stay near Baileys Harbor."
"My entire family stayed at Maxwelton for our wedding in August and loved it. It is charmingly retro, reminiscent of resorts in the Catskills or someplace similar. The main parlor (hangout area) is filled with games, books, and even has a record player with records. The grounds are lovely, beds are comfortable, and our needs were more than adequately attended to by friendly staff and Frank and Julie, the wonderful new owners."
"This review is about the Fairway Cabins, I cannot speak on the lodge rooms. Do yourself a favor and avoid the Fairways! When we arrived around 7pm and there was no one on desk. The confirmation information we received stated check in could be done until 730pm. Instead, our name and the room keys were left out in an unsecure area where anyone could have taken then. We never saw a concierge/desk clerk during our stay. We had several issues with the room which I will share below. The welcome letter that was left with our keys had a number that stated to call/text if needed. It took over 5 hours and two texts before we heard from anyone regarding our troubles. The room had a musty smell that never went away. The water had a hard mineral /metallic taste (pipes or hard water, possibly both) which left the sinks stained and a bad taste. The water also had a slightly fishy taste to it, enough that we had to buy bottled water to brush our teeth. When booking the room. It stated air conditioning was included; however, what it failed to state was that it was a window unit only in the bedroom and the sofa bed/living room area did not have ac so that room was always uncomfortable. Needless to say, the advertisement is misleading. It got chilly in the evenings and when we went to turn on the heat it didnt work. It required maintenance to come out and fix it which didnt occured until later in the evening the second day. To add insult, they cranked the heat to 90°F on the thermastat and left it there so when we returned, the room was obnoxiously hot. A window pane was cracked along the glass. All the turn cranks on the windows do not work so we couldn't open/close them. One window was left open before we got there and even maintenance couldn't fix/close it which was interesting when it rained the next day. Not to mention a security risk as you're on ground level. The shower head you have to pull down on the bottom of the faucet which is not a typical configuration. There was no sign indicating how to switch between bath and shower functions, nor was it stated in the welcome letter. The welcome letter provided an incorrect or nonfunctional wifi password and also stated there would be a fob for the lobby which turns out is no longer current practice. The cabin was booked because it advertises a bedroom and pullout sofa bed; yet there was no sheets, duvet or pillowcases for the pullout bed. Neither the welcome letter nor the confirmation email indicated that you had to notify them in advance that sheets would be desired for the pullout. Fairway cabins do not have room service, so if you want the towels changed, etc. you have to go up to the lodge desk to get them. Parking is terrible, the letter stated to park in the back of the cabins but it is a narrow lane and on a few occassions, it was so tight with cars you could barely get through to exit. There is no lighting in the back either and the pavement has been broken through in a few spots by tree roots which is hazardous since you can't see well when you’re walking from the back and along the side to get to the front of the cabin for entering. Needless to say, for the high cost of the cabin, one would expect far better care and arrangements."
"I'm hesitant to write a review for this place, because I want to make sure there are rooms available when we visit next! We had such a lovely stay at Maxwelton Braes. It's a slower paced golf resort (which means the bar and surrounding area were beautiful). I'm not sure how old the building is, but it's been taken care of wonderfully, and the dark wood and old fixtures around the building made it feel both cozy and elegant. Our favorite part of the lodge was the lobby area. There's a beautiful sunroom with game table, comfy couch, and fire pit. This was perfect for lazy morning coffee and late nightcaps. Location was great- close enough to everything, without feeling kitchy and touristy. We'll definitely stay again :)"
"The location is really nice and the staff is definitely friendly as other reviewers have commented. We really liked the ambience, quiet, and beautiful grounds. However, the Fairway Suites (Rustic Cabins) are in need of some major TLC. While very spacious, the decor is beyond just rustic and in desperate need of cleaning and upkeep. The cabins are in need of a very deep cleaning and probably some new carpet and furniture. The smell of the cabin has a heavy, old musty, wet, basement type smell that permeates through all your clothes. The safety of breathing in that odor over prolonged nights is very questionable. It gives a sense that the cabin is overall, dirty and dusty and was quite a turnoff for our family. In addition, the water from the bathroom and shower has an intense metallic/rusty lead pipe smell to it. You exit the shower smelling like lead. We found the shower/tub was not very clean leaving lots of long hair from whoever the previous guest was. On the plus side, the beds and linen were probably the cleanest and the most comfortable part of the cabin. A little extra attention to the rest of the cabin would go a long way to attract folks to come back. If we came back, we would try to stay in the rooms located in the main lodge."
