Nassau Station
About the Business
Nassau Station, located at 10317 Clay Street in Montville, Ohio, was once the site of the Nassau Astronomical Station from 1957 to 2008. Named in honor of Dr. Jason John Nassau, this observatory was a center for research and public outreach in the field of astronomy. The central instrument at the observatory was a 36-inch reflector of Cassegrain design, built in 1957 by the Warner and Swasey Company.
After being acquired by the Geauga Park District in 2008, the observatory underwent restoration and became a key feature of Observatory Park. This park, which opened in 2011, is home to various astronomical and natural history attractions, including a 25.5-inch Newtonian reflector donated by Ohio telescope-building legend Norman Oberle.
The 36-inch Nassau telescope is one of the largest publicly-accessible telescopes in Ohio, offering visitors the opportunity to observe the night sky in great detail. The observatory also features a museum and astronomers' bunkhouse, providing a deeper understanding of its history and purpose. In 2017, regular public access to the observatory was restored, allowing visitors to once again experience the wonders of the universe through its powerful telescope.

"I came here for hiking, but plan to return for star gazing. If you are coming here from off of Route 6, the Nassau Observatory has a small driveway tucked into the woods leading to its own parking lot about a quarter of a mile before you get to the main entrance for Observatory Park which has a separate driveway farther down Clay Street. There is a nice level hiking path located at the top of the parking lot that leads you into the woods, and you can continue to the meadow that takes you all the way over to Observatory Park which is farther down the road. Bug spray is a good idea here. I was here in the daytime, but I'm definitely looking forward to returning in the evening one night when the observatory is open."
"Very well kept trails. Beautiful scenery. Wonderful for a short stroll or a decent walk/hike. Pet friendly on leash."
