"My closing date was scheduled for Aug 17th 2023 at 3pm. I did receive the Closing Disclosure three days prior to the closing day. However, I noticed discrepancies between the last ALTA document, that I received on Aug 15th at 2:45pm. and the Closing Disclosure. I contacted First American Title, the title company, on August 15th as soon as I could to request the removal of the Owners insurance (something that was not included in the Closing Disclosure). Due to work commitments, I could only make this request after 5pm, but they were already closed for the day. I sent an email requesting prompt contact. On August 16th around 3pm, I spoke to a representative who mentioned that the responsible person was unavailable that day, promising to follow up after speaking with her. Unfortunately, there was no response that day. On August 17th, the closing day, April, the individual responsible for my documents, informed me that it was too late to make changes. I expressed my efforts to reach out since the day I received the document and my frustration regarding the timing of her absence. She indicated that she would ask Mattamy Homes, my constructor, if they allow the change. Then she called me back saying that to be able to make that change they needed to move my closing day for the next day but at cost of $500 penalty fee. Displeased with this arrangement, I contacted Mattamy Homes' Closing Coordinator, who agreed to remove the Owners Insurance and conduct the closing on the same day, August 17th, to avoid the penalty. An updated ALTA document was received at 10:44am, with my closing scheduled for 3pm. When the Owners insurance was removed, the Lenders Insurance increased significantly from $400 to $2061, which I anticipated but found excessively high. Despite my objections, First American Title and related parties refused to adjust the amount. Despite seeking options, both Mattamy Homes and my lender were unable to intervene, as the title company held the responsibility. Under pressure, as I had limited alternatives and stood to lose my down payment of approximately $25,000, I was compelled to proceed with the closing. At the closing, I was rushed through signing, presented only with the last page of the documents, and felt pressured to sign documents without a complete understanding. While the document figures didn't match the ALTA, I was assured they were accurate, and I was urged to sign. Additionally, I wasn't allowed to review the Lenders Insurance policy, and I was told to sign before viewing it, which was distressing. They said the Lenders Insurance was not for me (but I was the one paying) but for the Lender and only them would be provided with this policy after I pay and sign. This experience turned my dream of homeownership into a distressing ordeal. The lack of clarity and pressure to sign documents I couldn't fully comprehend was disheartening"
"I have been in Real Estate for over 20 years. My experience with this title office was one of the worst in my entire carreer. The title agent didn't return e-mails for more then a week, I had to call several times for the receptionist to answer the phone and still did not receive a call back from my processor. 4 days after the closing, I still don't have an executed settlement statement. Definitely an unacceptable way to run a business!"
"Easily the absolute worst title company to work with. This title company never reached out during our entire transaction, did not answer emails with an appropriate response. Said they would call back and don't even bother to actually call back. They kept the proceeds for days and didn't even bother to send it after confirming wiring instructions DAYS before closing. DO NOT CLOSE WITH THEM. I'd give negative stars if I could."
"My fiancé and I went to First American Title on February 25th to close on our new home. I want to stress that they did not email my fiancé a specific time to come... he was still waiting for certain documents to process. So by the time he called them for verification, they told him to come in at 11 & we ended up getting there about 40 minutes late because of the miscommunication. When we walked in, we were greeted by the young lady a the front desk & she was kind. Where it all went sour was when we met April. She was very cold from the beginning. She said nothing to me and kept calling my fiancé by his last name. Told him that they were “waiting on him” even though he was told last minute when to come in. When she finally acknowledged me, she asked if I was the realtor. I was shocked and felt embarrassed. I was wearing very casual wear & surely a realtor wouldn’t dress that way. I firmly told her that I was the fiancée. After we signed the papers, she had us in the room waiting for so long that I ended up having to leave the office briefly because not only was it cold, she was not communicating with us. There was a couple that came in after us & they were seen and was able to get all that they needed and then left. We were still sitting there. I’m not sure why she decided to work in a a field that requires interacting with families but she sucks at it big time and should consider something else. What an awful, awful lady. We are first time homeowners & she ruined the closing experience for us & we can’t get that back."
"I had a closing at First American Title yesterday and that was the worse experience I've had ever in my entire life. We had an appointment scheduled about a month ago to close on a new construction with home yesterday Sept 13th at 1:00Pm. My clients and I arrived at 12:45 and was immediately helped by the secretary. Shortly after a lady called us into her office, first she said her name was Carolyn, then she said her name was April, and she told us that we were late, I responded no, we were not. She started arguing with us, so I pulled the email trails to verify that our appointment time. She kept arguing with us and making my clients very uncomfortable so I asked her what had happened, if there was a change of schedule that she might have forgotten to share with us, she stood up and pushed the closing documents on the table and asked an assistant who's not a notary to come and sign a legal document. I told her that these were legal documents that need to be signed in front of a notary, having an unlicensed person doing so will be illegal. She said, well I don't have time for you guys, I have another appointment if you're not ok with my assistant then you guys can wait until I'm done with my other clients. The clients she was referring to, came after us. She did not have time for us that arrived 15 minutes before our appointment, but she had time to see the other clients that came in after us. Unbelievable!"
