Reviews of The Read House
"EVERYONE IS SO KIND! Traveled alone with my daughters and nephew for my oldest daughter’s birthday. I was concerned it wouldn’t be the best environment for kids, but we were warmly welcomed despite their rambunctiousness. We had a wonderful experience — dined at the lounge and otherwise spent most of our time in the pool. I love that everything we needed was right there in the hotel. Starbucks, dinner, etc. The location is perfect for exploring downtown, but we intended to spend our time solely at the Read House. It is absolutely stunning! A wonderfully preserved piece of history which creates the illusion of stepping back in time."
"Had a wonderful stay at the Read House for my nephew's wedding. The reception dinner was perfectly executed and everyone was professional and warming. Lovely historic hotel. My king premier room was exceptional. Everyone I encountered was delightful, from the front desk to housekeeping to the bartenders. I would highly suggest this hotel for a special event or holiday. And to add, I met fabulous people who were also staying there. Thank you, Read House, for a delightful weekend."
"I cannot say enough about how amazing this beautiful historic hotel is. We’ve stayed here four times, two of those being for the Roaring 20’s New Year’s Eve party, which is absolutely spectacular, and fun beyond words! We’ve stayed in the Manor House side, as well as the Historic Tower, which is our favorite. Both experiences were exceptional. The restoration, decor, and attention to detail is phenomenal, and you’re immediately transported back in time to the luxury and opulence of a fine 1920’s feel. Staff is top-notch, especially bellman John, who also gives entertaining ghost tours of Annalisa’s room 311, which also housed Al Capone. This free tour is an added bonus, and speaks to the historical importance as well as the “fun-factor” the hotel strives to deliver. I simply do not understand anyone giving a negative review, seeing firsthand on numerous occasions the care that is consistently taken to provide an excellent experience at all levels. The fountain pool is lovely, food and atmosphere in both locations is exceptional. Waitresses in the Billiards Room lobby bar celebrate “flapper hour” with dresses and delicious specialty cocktails. The desk staff, bellmen, and valets are courteous, welcoming and professional. The hardworking event and decorating staff keep the place sparkling and ready to host many kinds of unforgettable events. We look forward to returning year after year!"
"Spent 5 nights at the Read House starting Christmas Day. Pros: Hotel is beautiful, especially decorated for Christmas. Valet is amazing, quick service, very polite and friendly at every encounter. Had Christmas dinner at the restaurant. Amazing food and drinks. We didn’t have a reservation so we just grabbed seats at the bar. GM Victor is top notch, very attentive while making sure restaurant was running smoothly. All others encountered in restaurant were very polite , friendly , and helpful. Stayed in Premiere king room in historic tower. Room was great, very spacious, nicely decorated, clean. Cons: Only one elevator working in historic tower causes major backups and wait times. If this is because of waiting for a part, understandable. Otherwise, spend the money and get it fixed! The bar is nice, however some of the staff is not. There was an older gentleman that was super friendly and great, but the rest, not so much. Reach out if you want more specifics about this. Housekeeping could be better. We stayed 5 nights, room was made up daily with fresh towels and bed made. The vacuum was not ran once the whole stay. Trash wasn’t emptied a couple days. One day when we returned to room there were some unfolded washcloths and makeup towels left on our sink. Not sure where they came from. Overall, stay was good, some things could be tweaked to make even better. The hotel is great location for downtown."
"First off this is a cool hotel in a great location… having said that it does come with a few ups and downs. Upon arrival, the valet staff and doorman were great. Check in was pretty smooth since we had reservations. While heading up to our room we noticed only one elevator was working. I didn’t realize how much of a pain this would be for duration of our stay. Normally I would have taken the stairs but the stairs are not just one central staircase but you have to walk around on the next floor to get to the next set of stairs and etc. plus they were awful. I would have sworn they were employee only type stairs but they weren’t. Upon arrival to our room it was lovely except we had been told we would have a pull out sofa and we did not. I figured they were pretty booked with the holidays so I moved on and we made it work. The room was nice and keep the vintage feel that the entire hotel has which is very nice! The breakfast door hanger was laid out for us to place our order. We were so excited as it all sounded delicious. The only specification for breakfast was have the hanger on your door knob by 10pm the night before. We had ours out right when we checked in! The next morning we waited and waited on breakfast only to finally call and be told breakfast was only on the weekends. No where on the hanger did it say anything about that. We were only staying for weekdays so in that case I’m not even sure why it was in our room to begin with. Such a disappointment as we had our whole day planned and then had to make time to find breakfast for our kiddo! That night I noticed the walls must be thin bc it was quite loud at times. I called the front desk and was so pleased that they actually had ear plugs! They said oh we will bring you a pair right up! Fabulous except an hour later while waiting to go to bed my husband finally went down and just retrieved them from the front desk, which is what we should have done to begin with. The pool area is nice but keep in mind it is not monitored by any employees so there were several teenage kids playing rough and my little one wasn’t really able to enjoy much even the parents sitting around the pool were constantly getting splashed. The elevator issue continued until we checked out and caused constant delays and frustrations. Overall though the hotel itself is very nice and the location is cool! I think it was worth staying at least once just not sure it turned out to be what I consider more high end accommodations."
