Currahee Outdoors

"As mid-50s, recent empty-nesters, we’ve started getting into outdoor adventures—hiking, nature walks, kayaking, etc.—and have realized a need for more portable, higher volume hydration solutions. During an anniversary trip to the northeast Georgia mountains, we stopped in Toccoa and enjoyed a military parade, a delicious lunch at R&R Prime, and a most delightful and educational visit to Currahee Outdoors. We had expected cooler weather on a day that topped out in the 70s, so we initially stopped in just to see if they had a t-shirt to change into until the temps dropped back down to their forecasted Fall chillyness. Proprietors Don and Christy Hall greeted us with a warm welcome and let us know of some specials they were running on various brands and categories. We were immediately drawn to the hydration packs (which we knew nothing about other than we thought we might need them for hiking, kayaking, and SUP trips) and asked Don how to determine what we really needed for now (short treks on local trails and waterways) and later when we’ve worked up to longer—perhaps even overnight—trips. Don was a wealth of information, hands-on advice, and relatable anecdotal wisdom; and took our newbie questions and assumptions in stride while taking the time to carefully understand our needs, experience level, and concerns. Rather than just telling us what to get, he helped us try them on, understand how to get the proper fit and comfort level, what to do when carrying heavier weights, how to know if we had the weight evenly distributed, and so much more. He also gave us some tips on finding places to explore and what not to miss when we got there. In the end, we didn’t get the t-shirt. But we did leave with his and hers hydration packs that will probably be the last ones we ever buy and at a great price. I highly recommend visiting Currahee Outfitters for all you outdoor needs. We’re looking forward to visiting them again the next time we’re in the area."

They spend a lot of time creating events for public education, and have weekly events talking about hiking. They also offer guided and community hikes. Don't want to drop a bunch of money on camping gear? Don't worry, they have rentals! They currently offer outdoor essentials for backpacking and casual hiking, as well as a selection of clothing you won't find at other outdoor stores. Their choice of brands have a great price point too, so you can definitely find something for any budget. While their storefront is small, they have plans to expand as they grow. Stop by this place and you won't be disappointed!"
