"I completed a 1 year remote tour 1977/78. It was an experience I will never forget. I dreamed about this place for 10 yrs after. The dreams were always the same: I ended up back here for another year, " prison sentence." Lol! I was Air Weather Service support. And yes the weather was crazy, earthquakes and Typhoons. On a clear day spectacular ocean views. We would trap the blue fox pups and hold them, then release. Super cute."
"It's very relaxed, a lot of places to sit down or if you want something to snap on as a self-servicing snack bar that you can pick out what you need and then eat on a table.... Very small air station so you know when your time is come that you have to ride the G4"
"I was stationed on Shemya for one year 92/93 ( Air Force Firefighter) and it was definitely a one time experience. Cold/ Windy ( 60-100 mph winds), no trees, Blue Foxes everywhere. Worked part time in the Dining Facility, and for Shemya Construction Company from Wa State as a Dump Truck Driver when the New Huge Warehouse near the baseball fields was being built. Made more $$$$ working part time than my military pay:) Yes I know what the Mission was and still is so I will keep that to myself for Security Reasons."
"One of the fastest and less headache of an airport I have been to. The luggage drop off was easy, no hassle, and no wait time. The whole operation was as smooth as can be. Will be glad to try this airport again and again."
"Spent three months there in 1976. Only blue fox I saw was a stuffed one in the base library. Part of the original COBRA DANE contractor crew. Remember fish (caught on Attu) and chili parties at the smokehouse. Roughly 1000 male and 50 female Air Force personnel. Both officers and enlisted shared the O Club. What could possibly go wrong? The freight elevator in the main barracks building doubled as a brig. Experienced true horizontal rain, a Bering Sea dip, cable hill, exploring the wreckage of an RC-135. Best meal of the day were Air Force breakfast omelets. Worst meal of the day: sandwich and ‘fresh fruit’ boxed lunches up at the Dane. Scariest moment: crowd reaction at the movie theater during a fairly racy scene that somehow got past whoever picked the usually G rated movies. Got quite rowdy."
