About the Business

The Gouverneur Museum, located at 30 Church Street in Gouverneur, New York, is a fascinating institution that offers a glimpse into the rich history of the area. The museum features artifacts on three floors, an exhibit building outside, an Annex at the Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fairgrounds, and an authentic one-room schoolhouse.
The collection at the museum was built from local donations, showcasing unique items that connect us to the people of the past. The main building, a former Victorian home known as the Presbyterian Manse, was purchased by the Historical Association in 1974 and opened as a museum in 1976. It was placed on the National Historical Registry in 2015.
One of the highlights of the museum is its connection to Gouverneur Morris, a Founding Father of the United States who played a key role in shaping the Constitution. The museum offers insights into Morris's contributions and his impact on the nation's history.
Visitors can explore the museum virtually through a mobile app, or make an appointment to visit in person on Saturdays. The museum also hosts events and talks by local historians, providing a deeper understanding of the community's heritage.
For those interested in learning more about Gouverneur's history, the museum offers books for purchase in the Museum Shop. Donations are also welcome to support the museum's mission of preserving and sharing the area's rich cultural heritage.

"Very knowledgeable - great tour"
"Only open 2 days a week. Closed during Fair week."
"An eclectic mixture of local history. Joe gave us a very informative tour of the many rooms filled with Gouverneur treasures."
"I took my daughter here for a temporary geology exhibit that was at the museum a few years back. We ended up tour the entire museum and I was really impressed with the local connections to various historical events. Such as the local connection to World War II, the museum had four different rifles from the Pacific theater all with the Japanese Emperor's seal on them. It was a great source to learn about settlement in early upstate New York."
