"Shawn Newlands is absolutely tops in my book. He rescued me from oral cancer at age 52. He was incredibly pleasant, helpful and supportive every step of the way. He always gave us all the time we needed. My wife thinks he’s charming—and in the midst of things like cancer, that’s a big deal too. Dr. Newlands is probably one of the most knowledgeable ENT surgeons in the country, having contributed to and edited several important textbooks on ENT surgery. He not only eliminated my cancer, but he was also able to use a much less invasive surgery than initially had been planned, helping my quality of life to be much better afterwards. I’ve met a lot of doctors in my life—many of them exceptional—but if I had to select my favorite, it would be Shawn Newlands."
"I came to Dr. Newlands with a bleeding and crusty nose. He was nice enough to see me on the same day I called with symptoms. He asked me several times if I used illegal drugs up my nose (which I do not). I was diagnosed with a nasal septal perforation. He asked if I had lung or kidney disease (which I didn't). He cleaned out my nose and gave me Neil Med sinus rinse sample (including the bottle). He said the septal perforation was 2cm and probably to large to have a plug put in, but said it could be repaired surgically. He scheduled several blood tests, to test for autoimmune disease, and told me to come back in one month. I used the Neil Med sinus rinse as per his instructions and the results of my blood work were ANA positive titer 80 with a speckled pattern. I went for my follow up appointment after one month and he said "Your blood test result was barely positive, and you must be picking your nose". I said I do not pick my nose. He then started to be very condescending and patronizing, and said then it must be the Flonase nasal spray. ( Which does not cause nasal septal perforation ). I do have severe year round environmental allergies (which is noted on my medical history). He does not want to see me again. Meanwhile I still have this large hole in my septum which is high up in my nose, and I still have a burning, stinging sensation with constant sneezing. I will never go back to this doctor nor his practice at the University of Rochester Otlaryngology. Where I was also seeing another doctor for issues with my right ear. I left this office feeling like a fool, and dejected."
