"Finally breaking my silence. A couple of years ago, SBU inflicted the worst kind of trauma on me by dragging me here against my will and forcing me to speak with a therapist who came in with her own biases and was aggressive. This school isn’t looking to solve the problem, they’re looking to get rid of the problem. And that problem, according to Stony Brook, is you. Apparently this school cannot afford to ruin their precious reputation so it’s easier to just get rid of the depressed kids ASAP. Do NOT come here. If for some reason you’re compelled to attend this school, do not go to CAPS. Go to an actual service that wants to help you."
"Had a consultation appointment for 20-30 mins over the phone with a SENIOR COUNSELOR who has 30+ years experience and I have to say it was probably one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had with mental health counseling. The person barely knew how to sympathize with me and I felt like I was just another checklist for her to go through and move on. I called their office 3 times today, 12/2/22 and they weren’t even able to connect me with a counselor that I preferred. The only recommendation they gave was to use TimelyCare, where you can receive counseling services based on your preferences (which I think I will consider instead!!). I’m shocked since CAPS was highly recommended to Stony Brook Students who are looking for help or just someone to talk to. Their are also advertisements and fliers seen EVERYWHERE on campus promoting this service and to call if you need them. I was supposed to have a follow up appointment with the senior counselor and she said that she was unable to get through to me on the phone due to an “electrical issue” with the office phones and she claimed to have called me twice, but I never saw a single missed call or voicemail when I went to check my phone. To be quite honest, I felt like I was neglected and given the run around when I called to ask what happened. If you are someone struggling with mental health issues who is living on campus at Stony Brook University and you really need someone to talk to, you should be able to get what you need right away without excuses, waiting in line, or being treated like another cog in a machine. If you want to be heard and listened to, do yourself a favor and use TimelyCare instead and not CAPS!!"
