Her rich knowledge base and innate ability to effortlessly tailor lessons according to a student’s personality and learning style was instrumental in nurturing their love for music and the discipline it requires. Susan is a gifted teacher who expertly instructs her students in the mastery of technique and theory. Yet the aspect of her teaching that I most appreciate as a parent is the way she genuinely values each person with whom she engages. Children are especially attuned to this and it enhances their ability to comprehend new techniques and concepts. It is also a great motivator when it comes to practice at home. I saw her create a “can do” attitude in my kids. It was just understood that they would accomplish their goals. As a teacher myself, I was in awe as I observed her. When my husband observed Susan’s class at the Third Street Music School Settlement, he was impressed by how adeptly she managed the adolescent mind; especially her ability to remind students of their responsibilities with a dash of her kind, yet witty, humor. Ultimately the highest praise for Susan comes from my daughter. She is so disappointed that she can no longer take lessons with Susan. She is the very high bar against which all other piano instructors are compared. NYC’s loss is Rochester’s gain."

"I have taken piano lessons on and off with a number of teachers over the years. And although I was adept at reading music, I was unable to play accurately. Eventually, I lost interest in playing since I did not have the skills necessary to progress to advanced pieces. In just 6 months, Susan was able to teach me more than I had ever learned from others, because she taught me something that I should have learned from day one: technique. Technique is critical for precision, for the prevention of fatigue and injury, and for expression. What I have learned from Susan in such a short time has made it so much more enjoyable to play.
