"I’ve come here a few times and gotten hair cuts from Takashi - 5 stars always. Today I got a haircut from Omae, and the cut looked great until she used scissors to thin out my hair after blow drying. I thought after blow drying it was done, so when she took out scissors again I assumed it was small touch ups. Before I realized what was happening, she removed huge chunks of my hair (2in long! not just at the very bottom) all across. I felt so sad as I saw huge thick clumps of my hair falling, but as many of us know, it is hard to speak up during the cut. At that point it would have been too late. I don’t think it is appropriate at all for a stylist to thin hair out without first asking, and then on top of that it is very inappropriate to be being careless with the scissors and completely overdo it to the point of the hair looking basically see through at the bottom perimeter. Now in my case, I have thick voluminous hair everywhere except the bottom 2 inches which are thin, flat, wispy and do not blend with the rest of the hair. It looks so strange. I am now going to have to go through the long process of waiting slowly for my hair to grow a couple inches so I can just chop off the part she thinned out, because it looks so bad compared to the rest of the hair. Takashi, my previous stylist, was always against thinning and even warned me against it when I myself asked for a little bit of thinning in the past. I recommend seeing Takashi for hair cuts, and I would ask that Omae please not thin customers’ hair without asking first and being extremely careful to not over do it."
"My hair isnt thick and rather fine so ive never had any hair stylist spend more than 25 minutes cutting my hair! Takashi-san who was my hair stylist spent a whole hour, checking with me about the length and asking if i like it etc. i can see why people spend $80+ on a haircut now. You just feel very pampered and taken care of here. Will be back :)"
"I had a good haircut from Omae-san and she was very friendly, as were the other staff at the salon. No doubt about her skillset, and I appreciated the many suggestions she provided to address my hair concerns. When I go to a Japanese hair salon, what I value just as much as the service is the experience, which fell a bit short of my expectations. The hair-washing experience for me was anything but relaxing and felt very rushed -- there was quite a bit of water splashing on my face and there was no head massage which I believe is pretty standard for Japanese hair washes. I also was not provided any beverage option which made it awkward when I had to ask for water, despite the water dispenser and tea being in a visible location from us. Overall, the price is very fair and students get $5 off which is nice, but I guess you get what you pay for."
"I got my hair cut from Tomoko herself. She is a wonderful hair cutter and a lovely person. It was my first time going to this salon and I loved it. We talked about Mitsuwa market and various other things. She is very kind and the 4th Street salon is beautiful and elegant. I received a perfect bob haircut. She helped me figure out how to cut it to achieve my desired style. I look so fancy! I think she is the best at blow drying. My hair looks so pretty- bouncy and straight at once. Thank you Tomoko! Great tea too."
"Omae was a really good hairdresser! She was gentle, attentive, and gave me exactly what I asked for. The salon was clean. I cut off 5 inches and paid $81 for the haircut - not a bad price for NYC when I'm so particular about my hairstyle. I'm absolutely visiting again. Before and after photos attached."
