"I was looking for a hair spa for locs and was pleasantly surprised to find one in Brooklyn. After not having my hair done for 7 months I initially booked an appointment with Ayaba for full loc maintenance and a loc detox. When I got there it was pretty empty and the door was locked which I liked. People aren’t just walking in and out all Willy Nilly. No one trying to sell you DVDs or perfume. That alone created a safe and relaxed vibe since everyone there is by appointment only. After looking at my locs Ayaba noticed I had a major lint problem in the back. That was the purpose of the loc detox in my mind but she informed me that a detox would not remove lint so she suggested I dye it. I was already considering dyeing it so I went with the dye instead of the detox because I didn’t have much build up. Ayaba claimed she doesn’t do dye but she definitely helped that day and I think it came out beautiful. I also got the double strand twists for the first time and they came out so cute. Ayaba helped me feel comfortable and was fun to chat with. I will definitely return next time with my daughter. I highly recommend!"
"The first time I tried to loc my hair in 2021, I had Empress Sharima. My experience with her was great, she took her time to explain the process and answered all of my questions. I booked for a loc initiation which is advertised as $185, but because my hair was shaved on the back and sides she only charged me $90. Unfortunately, I had to end my loc journey due to personal reasons. Fast forward, yesterday I was ready to restart my journey, so I booked with the artist available, Ayaba. I arrived on time and she stated that I booked the wrong appointment. I booked loc with shaved sides and back, so I accepted what she said and asked if she could still take me for the loc initiation. She stated that it may not be enough time because it takes about 3 hrs and mine was scheduled for 2hrs. She went on to say that she doesn’t want to feel rushed which I understood, so we tried to see if she could put me in for another day. Eventually, we came to the agreement that she would work on me until her client after me shows up, and then she’ll go back and forth until she finishes. Keep in mind that my appointment was scheduled for 2hrs (5-7pm). She started my hair at 5:05pm. Around 6:11pm she was almost done with twisting my hair, but stopped because her other client showed up. I didn’t check the time until she had already started washing his hair. At this point I was confused because I thought she meant she would pause on my hair if I go pass 7pm. After washing his hair I thought she would come back to me because it was still within my appointment time, but she didn’t. At 6:48pm I asked her if I needed to wait until she was done with him and she said “yes, i’ll be done with him soon.” I pointed out that it was still my appointment time and she gave me a ridiculous excuse, at this point I was just annoyed. I guess she sensed it and at 6:55pm she told him to give her 10mins to finish my hair. At this point she seemed to be annoyed with me and the rest of my time in the salon was quite uncomfortable. I would’ve left had I not already have most of my hair complete. She was literally done within 10mins. I then sat under the dryer for about 30mins. So in total my hair took about 1hr 45mins. After the dryer all she did was take out the clips and left me as is - no style!! I went to pay and she said “you did a loc initiation which is $185 but your hair wasn’t too much so I ’ll take off $20.” I ended up paying $172 with tax. Keep in mind that my hair is shaved on the sides and back, it took her about 30mins total to twist it all. This was disappointing given that I was charged $90 for the same service by another artist in the same shop. The customer service was not up to standards. The fact that someone else walked in during my booked time and was serviced while I waited for 44mins didn’t make me feel good. It made no sense that she stopped working on my hair when she did. All I needed was 10 more mins within the timeframe that I booked for!! I am saddened by this experience because I really liked the salon and was hoping to make it my go to."
"Amazing space, locticians will spoil you with love, laughter, professionalism and great Queenship. I brought four bottles of the hair and body oil frankincense..three men stopped me to tell me I smell great. Very satisfied."
"This salon I thought I could make a home salon. I had a handful of appointments and enjoyed the experience: good vibes, music and conversation. On my last appointment, I scheduled with stylist, Ona Maat, that never worked on my hair for coloring and styling. From there, there were so many issues 1. I scheduled a coloring and upon scheduling the service, you are told to send an email so you can have a consultation with the stylist. A week prior to the appointment, I still had not heard anything and emailed. A few days prior, I spoke to the stylist, told her what I wanted, she told me pricing and we came to our agreement. (Mind you, she quoted me a price for the coloring) 2. The style I chose for my hair was not under their "basic styles" service that I scheduled. The owner was involved in this conversation and its the second time she spoke to me in a curt, condescending manner since coming to this salon. When I switched, the style to double strand twist, this too was not considered basic and I would be charged extra. Basic style were not explained when I asked. I swallow this. 3. I am perturbed about the styling but hold my tongue and the stylist proceeds to tell me that because my energy is off she cannot start my hair. That is crazy to me as a customer who is paying for her services. I tell her give me 15. 4. When she returns, she apologizes for her lack of preparedness because she is new to the shop and does not know all of the policies. I proceed to tell her I feel gaslighted because you're telling me I cant have my feelings, my energy but your unpreparedness caused the misunderstanding and the turn in my energy. 5. She starts sectioning my hair and as she sees how much of the locs I wanted colored, she tells me the price quoted isn't the correct price due to the store policies and had we had the consultation (one I would be charged for according to her), we could have figured that out. As the stylist, she was supposed to schedule it but that did not happen. So we have another stop in starting to hone in on the price. 6. I let everything go and return to the chair and she says she doesn't know if she has enough color for my hair. Huh? I ask can we go to the store and she says, "It's raining". I give grace cause she was older with a cane but at that point, I'm like what can we do. And she said she can mix colors but she's not sure how the color will look. I didn't want that because I would like to know what color my hair will be. We go back and forth where she tells me she woke up at 5a, coming from NJ, for me, to do my hair. The manipulation of it all. She told me I was inflexible. Reading above, I compromised on multiple things before that moment. At the end, we did not proceed with the services. I found her and the owner to be condescending and lacked understanding. I also feel this salon charges for everything under the sun. How are you charging the customer for a consultation? There was lack of customer of service and no one would acknowledge how I was being treated. For the stylist to be unprepared and unknowledgable about store policy, I'm not sure how I was the wrong party. I was the wronged party. Suffice it to say, I won't be returning. It was one of the most horrible services I received (or lack thereof) and I was bothered moreso how I was treated."
"For me, working on my hair has always been therapeutic. The stylists at Locks of Nu have given me the therapy I needed for my locs. A special shout-out to Ayaba for her helping hands. The style always looks great. I love the atmosphere here. The music vibes are lovely. The herbal rinse is my favorite. Thanks, Sharima!"
