Reviews of Colleen Cowperthwait, PhD
"Has to be one of the best providers I've ever had. She's thorough, personable, easy to reach via MyChart outside of appointment hours, and has always been respectful of my needs. She doesn't force an agenda at any visit and works with me to address my needs in that moment. She provides plenty of resources for various learning styles, and she respects when I tell her that certain approaches or types of learning do or don't work with me. Even if we start a visit with a plan to discuss a specific topic, she is very flexible and allows my needs to guide each visit. I cannot speak highly enough about her."
"Saw Dr Cowperthwait through The Durham VA Medical Center for treatment under the Veterans Choice & Accountability Act at Duke. I am a US Army combat veteran 100% disabled for PTSD. Went to Duke Psychiatry at Civitan to see her for PTSD treatment. She never established a clear PTSD treatment plan nor goals. There is a clear defined evidence based treatment for PTSD authorized through the VA. Saw her for a year and I continually asked her for one throughout treatment. She never clearly defined one. Then she explained she could no longer see me and abruptly ended all appointments and "Treatment." She discontinued appointments with no aftercare plan nor follow up provider. This happening at the start of COVID 19 which made for an inappropriate moment to start a new mental health challenge. We never worked towards a clear, nor defined goal. She had no plan. She is an irresponsible doctor. Duke is accepting veterans as patients from Durham VA without the proper corresponding paperwork causing circumstances like this. On the other hand (or the dialectical side) I did meet and work with some great students in groups at the Duke Psychiatry at Civitan clinic who have become doctors. Dr Matt Southward and Dr Kristen Reinhardt. Dr Reinhardt later became my psychologist in the Durham VA for 4 months after graduating from Duke, prior to seeing Dr Coperthwait. Dr Reinhardt ranks with one of the best psychologist I have had. I have had some good psychologists in the VA. Very good ones with years of experience at the Fayetteville VA, and in the VA system in general, as well as the National Center of PTSD."
