Reviews
"Positives: It has a nice view, close to downtown Asheville, office staff is really nice, it has a small gym and a pool, neighbors are friendly, there are community events they plan like bbq's, the maintenance people are really kind and quick. Negatives: It's quite expensive to live here. The walls are really thin so you hear all your neighbors. There is no cardboard recycling. They might make you move your car a few times a year or else you get towed (so they can do things like audits and painting the lot). I woke up a bit late that morning, so my car ended up getting towed. I had to pay $282 to get it back."
"We lived at The District for 6 months while extensive repairs were made to our home following water damage. We can't say enough good things about the apartments themselves. Spacious, airy, with high ceilings and big windows. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful mountain view from our windows and I loved sitting at my desk each day looking out on the Blue Ridge. The community is filled with pet-loving people and we loved meeting all the dogs in the building, and even some of the cats! The staff were very helpful and maintenance, the very few times we needed them, were quick to respond and tidy in their work. We felt very fortunate to land there. But there were 2 issues that caused me to deduct a star. The buildings are HUGE and for the building we were in, only one entrance had an elevator. Our apartment was on the 4th floor and at the opposite end of the building from the elevator. We are an older couple and the very long walk from the parking lot to our unit was quite difficult. And particularly when trying to transport items such as groceries and our pets. There should have been an elevator at both ends of the building, and I can only imagine that one was left out as a cost-cutting measure. That's unacceptable. The other reason for losing a star was the lack of cleanliness in the common areas of the building such as lobbies, stairwells, the elevator and the elevator lobbies. So often there was trash lying around for days on end. Because I walk with a cane and always had a bag, I couldn't pick it up and no one else did either. One week there was dog poop in the elevator lobby and that took several days to disappear. It was not unusual for there to be beer cans as well. Really surprising for such a pricey community, but it happened so consistently we thought it must be a tenant who just didn't care. And despite various staff members being in and out of the building each day, they never took care of it either. All in all, we would be happy to live there again should that need arise. But we would be more vocal with management about keeping the place clean."
"I moved to Asheville 5 months ago to be closer to my children. This is my first experience with apartment living since my early 20s. I must admit it is an adjustment living in an apartment. But the friendly staff have made this transition easier than expected. I love my apartment with its little balcony (which I enjoy daily). The maintenance to my apartment (minimal) is done efficiently and timely."
"The community is not perfect, but definitely among the best in Asheville. It is the only apartment community I would consider living at in the area. The problem seems to be not with the local apartment staff, but with the corporate managers/landlord. They are not great, and from what I've experienced and heard are greedy. Example: They took out 1, FREE to use, EV charger and put in 5 new ones that charge at about the same rate, BUT are now paid and cost over twice the cost of electricity and are close to fast charger pricing, but on average 20x-30x SLOWER. They DID lower the kWh price from the original proposed cost of ~$0.35/kWh, and are now considering a yearly pass idea I proposed. If they added a yearly unlimited pass, this would certainly change my thoughts on the upper management and this community. Maintenance crew has always been excellent, and for the 3 years I've lived here it's still mostly the same faces. I have no complaints about them. Upkeep on landscaping is top notch and they regularly make additions/improvements to the community. Eliza, the new property manager, is very kind. She listens and tries to make things right. However, I've come to realize that it's not her fault it doesn't always work out that way. Staff is great, but retention is horrible. I think that speaks volumes about the upper management. It wouldn't take much to make this community worth the premium pricing, they are close, but a couple of things I find to be important are holding me back from leaving a 5-star review. 1. EV charging pass, as mentioned previously, we used to have free charging, now we have pricey charging with more stalls. The extra stalls are nice, but are not really necessary at this time nor are they worth the trade-off of free charging. I have a charger at my store and warehouse that both charge at the same speed, and I pay a third per kWh. I would STILL pay $995 or $1295 a year to charge my car at home from time to time or overnight. Having that option would be great. 2. Outdoor surveillance would be nice to have in the parking lots. There have been several incidents where license plates were stolen. 3. Bee problem, I cannot go out onto my balcony without being attacked by bees/wasps that nest right above the balcony under the overhanging roof. 4. Better handling of widespread issues, such as fire alarms and sprinklers last year. This was horribly handled by management, fire alarms going off for entire buildings several times a day in the middle of the coldest winter we've had in a long time. The District did nothing to compensate residents for this. Again, for apartments charging $1800-$3500/mo for buildings that are beginning to show their age, I think these are fairly reasonable expectations. Overall, I am happy living here, for me the free charging was a huge reason I stayed here over buying a house, and that ship has seemingly sailed."
"We've been living at the District for 4 months now and we've really loved it. It's definitely a "premium" rent price, but we feel that we get what we pay for. The unit is huge and the high ceilings are such a nice feature. Management has always been very responsive, even before we moved in (we accidentally had furniture delivered early and they put it in the unit for us!). We had issues with our dishwasher and it was addressed and fixed promptly. They also seem to do their best communicating when there are issues. In other complexes we've had to beg for updates on trash pick up or maintenance, the District sends constant communication if there are any mishaps with 3rd party contractors. We've really enjoyed the monthly events they host (Shane and Amy are great!). There are a TON of dogs that live here, but the walls seem pretty thick as we don't often hear our neighbors. Overall, yes it's expensive, but the amenities are great and the folks in the office have been 100 times better than anywhere else we've lived. Plus the views are dope."
