"Parking is a little rough, but the trail was fun."
"This was by far one of my favorite hikes so far in NC. I was looking for a strenuous up-hill climb to help prepare me for hiking in Peru and this place did not disappoint. I felt like it would go on forever, but once you reach the top, it flattens out as you hike around the mountain top and look at all the amazing views. I didn't want to go back down. I'm not exactly sure how long the hike from the bottom to the top is, but I passed another hiker on the way and was told the entire trail(called "short off" trail) was 5 miles or so one way."
"One of the best trails so far I have hiked in Linville Gorge area. Breathtaking views are all alone the trail on your way to Shortoff Mountain. Lots of blooming rhododendrons and other flowers make this trail colorful during the spring time."
"I think this should be Shortoff Mountain Trail (which starts at the end of Wolf Pit Road). From what I could find, there's no such thing as Wolf Pit Trail. This hike starts out fairly steep. It cuts off to the right (follow the sign) and then there's a series of switchbacks to the top of the mountain. It merges with the mountains to sea trail and then levels out after a bit. There are great views of Lake James and the mountains on the whole hike up. Once we got to the top, we continued on for a while past a pond to some more views of Table Rock. I thought the initial views at the summit were the best though. The estimates I saw for the hike were 4-5 miles, so I'm not quite sure exactly how long it was. The parking situation is pretty terrible. There's not really any good spots, but everyone kind of makes their own. I can't imagine how bad this would be in the summer. This is a great, not too strenuous hike with good views throughout."
"Good hike! Views for shortoff mountain are awesome. It's strenuous in some areas. The footing is rough because it's loose rocks at some places. I skidded a few times. Definitely use boots here- not tennis shoes. The outcroppings offer breathtaking views. It was quiet on a Monday. I passed 4 people. Great opportunity for camping too."
