"Rainy and foggy day, but still didn’t hamper this hike up to Roan High Knob, on down the Appalachian Trail and then back up to Roan High Bluff, before heading back down to the Carvers Gap Trailhead. Of course, I didn’t see any view on the hike since it was low clouds and drizzling. But what a nice hike up the mountain, down the other side and around the High Bluff area. Definitely want to return when the weather is good, so I can take in the view everyone raves about."
"On a clear day, the views from the Grassy Ridge go on forever and are well worth the effort. Many kids and many seniors hike this trail so it’s completely doable. Although you can easily do it without poles, they help on the decent, esp. when the rocky trails are wet or icy. Parking lots fills early on nice fall days and on the weekends, as do all the spots along the road. That said, unlike other trails, the assent to the trailhead is paved. As others have said, dress in layers for cooler, windy temps on the balds. I don’t think everyone goes to all the balds so the further you hike the less people there will be. I’ll be back in June to see the azaleas and rhododendron in bloom as I can imagine it’s gorgeous!"
"There are so many great hiking options from here. This really is one of the prettiest parts of the Appalachian Trail with amazing views. If up for 5 miles round-trip, I would recommend going to Grassy Ridge Bald (short spur off AT). There are plenty of camping spots, too. Otherwise, it's going to be an out-and-back. It never gets worse than a steady solid grade; nothing BRUTAL. There are lots of blueberries along the way, too! Definitely bring enough water as with the ridgeline, there are not really spots to refill. Be aware, this spot gets slammed, but if you hike beyond the first round bald, the crowds thin out."
"Love this hike! There are awesome views throughout, and it's unlike typical forest hikes where you are under a tree canopy. There is a decent amount of elevation gain, but the trail is very manageable to walk on. You'll definitely want to wear sunscreen and be mindful that there are bees along this trail June is a great time to go to see the Rhododendrons in bloom!"
"Beautiful trail, well maintained. No trash bins at the beginning of trailhead. Info post, about 20 spots, and a one stall bathroom. Get here early, it’s a popular trail with break taking views."
