Reviews of French Broad Outpost Dude Ranch
"Awful awful awful. The owner was unprofessional from the very beginning. He talked down to all the women and made many references to their husbands "credit cards and bank accounts" and that we knew how to get that money. He told extremely experienced riders of over 40 years that they needed to unlearn everything they knew (mind you, this is BEFORE we were in the arena.) The food was also poor. We found out on day one that the owner is vegetarian (nothing wrong with that) however, it seemed as if they were trying to make use vegetarians as well with the awful food. One day it was canned tomato soup. One day it was sandwiches. Another day it was nasty cheap ham. We never saw a steak like in the pictures. By day 4 we literally told them we were going into town to eat (we were starving and had no more food that we had brought ourselves) and were met with passive aggressive comments about how they were finally going to cook chicken but they guessed they would just eat it themselves. Not to mention, the owner made nasty comments about women's genitals in an attempt to tell a joke at dinner in front of my 16 year old daughter. The horses, these poor horses. They are not taken care of. Sometimes we would fill the water troughs as they had cracks in them and there were no water for the horses. They were underfed. They were unkempt. And their living conditions in the barn were despicable. There are live electrical wires that were near water hoses. There were mountains of bird poop everywhere. The stalls were not properly bedded. One of us was put on a mare that was going into heat while there was a stallion in the arena. This is dangerous! Than the trailrides. They were short and not sweet. The owner took us up the small mountain behind the camp and put a beginner rider in the middle of the group and left her to her own devices. She almost fell off the mountain twice. It was such an awful experience for her that we began encouraging her on how to handle her horse because she was panicking. All the while, the owner had ridden ahead of the group and never even looked down to see this poor, embarrassed panicked woman. Once we made it to the top, he ignored her tears and continued to ride on. The cattle drive was ridiculously short and about 200-250 yards in length. The wife was just like her husband and made several nasty comments throughout the week and we have never been so glad to leave a place as we were this one. Make sure you read every poor review and see just how much they all line up."
"Owner teaches you how to ride and saddle your assigned horse for the week. The riding trails are along the river and up into the mountains. The cattle drive was really good."
"Don’t let the lack of customer service at booking prevent you from enjoying a memorable getaway. The owners and staff are overworked and understaffed since the pandemic. I did not feel like this impacted the quality of our stay. I like to constantly be doing something, but I was never bored. It was clean, and we had everything we needed. It might be helpful for others to know that there is absolutely no phone or internet service, no bottled water, and anyone close to the weight limit should probably book a different trip. The only other dude ranch I have stayed at was Rocking Horse Ranch in NY, but French Broad Outpost felt much more authentic. Myself, my son, and the other guests we met had a wonderful time. Penning the cattle was everyone’s favorite activity."
"Love love love this place !! Shawn and JoAnn are wonderful people and they sure do love their animals !! We had plenty to eat, plenty of activities and clean rooms. The staff was very nice and helpful. My 17 year old daughter loves it there so much.. it truly made an impact on her life. The first time we were there last year she was dreading the trip because of no cell phone service. By the end of the week she left there a completely different young lady. Something about that place allowed her to truly find out who she was. We've been back two more times since then and each time we love it a little bit more. Thank you so much Shawn and JoAnn for sharing your horses with us."
"It’s been about a year since we stayed here and sometimes I still think back on how horrible of a stay this was. We did not get what we paid for. Know your payment is non refundable even if you don’t get a majority of the services you paid for (our issue had nothing to do with their weight limit). On top of this, we were treated poorly, including our two toddler girls. We were ready to leave after two days but paid for the whole week - this isn’t a vacation. The only redeeming factor was the hired help there (NOT management), the other guests, and our family time."
