About the Business
Rhododendron Gardens, located at State Road 1348 in Bakersville, North Carolina, is a stunning park and tourist attraction that offers visitors a glimpse of natural beauty at its finest. Surrounded by lush meadows, rare moss, and towering evergreen forests, the gardens are truly breathtaking. Situated above the Appalachian valleys, the gardens are often shrouded in clouds, earning them the nickname "Cloudland."
Visitors to the Rhododendron Gardens can witness the beauty of the Catawba Rhododendron bushes, which bloom in spectacular fashion during late June. Each individual flower boasts a unique beauty, with intricate patterns of spots that guide bees in search of nectar.
As described by Dr. Elisha Mitchell, for whom nearby Mt. Mitchell is named, the Rhododendron Gardens offer a stunning view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The gardens are a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers, drawing thousands of visitors each year to witness the peak bloom period.

"Lovely meandering paved trail through forest & rhododendron thickets with lots of other wildflowers. Some great distant views as well. Get a map or take a picture of the one posted at the kiosk. There are restrooms at the kiosk."
"Great hiking spot. Beautiful view at the overlook. Smooth hiking trail. I am looking forward to going again, and bringing my actual camera. I only had my phone with me. Great spot for a photographer."
"This was a great hike with a great view and beautiful trails! The drive there is beautiful too. We went there the last week of June and it seemed the rhododendrons were already past their prime, but they were still bloomed and pretty! It was extremely cold and windy at first, but getting into the trail it was comfortable. It was quite foggy when we went, but it made for quite the enchanted forest scene! Definitely want to go again!"
"Beautiful blooming rhododendrons as far as the eye can see under an ethereal fog which made our visit even more spectacular. There were friendly people there who come every year who gave us info that enriched our experience."
"The rhododendron gardens are beautiful. You can drive straight up to the gardens with 2 parking lots and public restrooms at both parking lots. The upper parking lot also has a picnic area. The whole garden features sidewalks so wheelchairs/strollers will have no problem. We visited mid June 2023 and the rhododendrons were not really blooming yet. It was still a lovely garden but if you can make it when the rhododendrons are blooming I bet that is a site to see! You can also park in the lower Carvers Gap main parking lot and hike up to the garden which is about 3 miles. This is what we did. The trail intersects the Appalachian trail. You pass a shelter on the trail. The trail is well established. You encounter roots. Most of the trail is like walking thru a creek bed. We encountered flowing water in part of the trail. No problem to walk through. Where you turn to go to the gardens there is a short trail that goes to a lovely vantage point."
