Achievement Academy of Durham

Achievement Academy of Durham, located at 1905 Chapel Hill Road in Durham, North Carolina, is a school that offers the Durham Literacy Center’s Youth Achievement Program (YAP). This program provides intensive, individualized high school equivalency instruction to out-of-school young adults ages 16-24 in a safe and supportive environment. With strong role models, academic, career, and social skills counseling, students have the opportunity to explore various post-secondary and career pathways.

The program, which meets Monday-Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., is free of charge and includes pre-testing to determine each student's current level and personal goals. Small group classes are then assigned based on these assessments, with two experienced teachers providing direct instruction daily. Students also have access to computer-assisted instruction to improve specific skills and accelerate learning.

In addition to academic studies, career guidance is provided to help students achieve their post-secondary goals, and all students take their official tests at Durham Technical Community College to earn the North Carolina High School Equivalency Diploma. Youth Achievement serves young adults aged 16-24 seeking instruction for their High School Equivalency diplomas, with a focus on reading, math, and the five HiSET subjects. Students work with staff and community partners on career and college planning, graduating from the program upon passing all five HiSET subjects and earning their diploma.

Placement testing includes reading comprehension and math tests, as well as a short interview to determine program fit and develop a study plan. Spaces in the program are filled on a rolling basis, so interested individuals are encouraged to inquire about current availability. The Durham Literacy Center is a nonprofit organization, and donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
